Description
The Procat SDS+ drill set 4-cutter is a carbide-tipped hammer drill bit set in a hinged metal box. The set covers diameters of 5–12 mm and the bits come in two lengths, 110 mm and 160 mm, so the same box has both a short bit for shallow anchoring and a longer bit for penetrations.
The tip of the bits is a four-cutter carbide tip. Two extra cutters between the main cutters spread the impact energy over more edges, so the bit goes through reinforcement and hard aggregate grains without changing direction and the hole stays round. The roundness and exact diameter of the hole determine the holding power of wedge and drop-in anchors, so the tip design directly affects the strength of the fixing.
The SDS-plus shank locks into the rotary hammer chuck without tightening. The grooves in the shank transfer impact energy to the bit and allow the bit to move lengthwise during impact. The bits fit all rotary hammers and hammer drills with an SDS-plus chuck.
The flute of the bits removes drilling dust from the hole, so the impact goes into the material rather than loose debris, and the bit stays cooler. The metal box keeps the bits in order of size and protects the carbide tips from each other in transport. The set of long bits with the same tip design is the Procat SDS+ drill set 4-cutter 4-piece 6-8-10-12x260mm, and for single bits the same use is served by the Irwin masonry drill bit SDS+.
Intended use and suitability:
The set is intended for drilling holes in mineral-based building materials with a rotary hammer or hammer drill.
- Concrete: anchor and fixing holes; the four-cutter tip keeps its direction even at reinforcement.
- Brick and block: fixing holes for brackets, trims and furniture in masonry structures.
- Natural stone and mortar: hard, uneven aggregate, where a two-cutter tip wears unevenly.
- Electrical, HVAC and plumbing installations: small 5–8 mm holes for brackets and fixings, larger 10–12 mm holes for anchors.
Package contents:
- SDS+ drill bits with a four-cutter carbide tip, diameters 5–12 mm, lengths 110 mm and 160 mm
- Hinged metal box with marked places for the bits
Features:
- Four-cutter carbide tip: four cutting edges keep the hole round and the bit on course.
- SDS-plus shank: tool-free bit change, impact energy is transferred directly to the bit.
- Two lengths: 110 mm for shallow fixing, 160 mm for deeper holes.
- Size range 5–12 mm: covers the most common plastic, wedge and drop-in anchors and concrete screws.
- Metal box: bits in order of size, tips protected in transport.
Technical specifications:
- Diameters: 5–12 mm.
- Lengths: 110 mm and 160 mm.
- Tip design: four-cutter carbide tip.
- Shank: SDS-plus.
- Materials: concrete, brick, block, natural stone.
- Storage: hinged metal box.
Procat SDS+ drill set 4-cutter instructions for use:
Fitting: Wipe the bit shank clean and grease it lightly. Push the shank into the SDS-plus chuck until the lock clicks, and pull the bit to check. Even when fitted, the bit moves lengthwise; this is part of how the SDS fitting works.
Choosing the bit: Choose the bit diameter to suit the fixing and the length to suit the depth of the hole. The drilling depth is shorter than the overall length, because the shank and the start of the flute stay outside the hole. A short bit is stiffer and more accurate when the hole is shallow.
Drilling: Start at low speed without hammer action until the tip has gripped the surface. Switch on hammer action and drill perpendicular to the surface with even feed pressure. Pull the bit out from time to time to clear dust. At reinforcement, reduce the feed pressure and let the tip cut.
Maintenance: Let the bit cool by itself; quenching a hot bit makes the carbide brittle. Wipe the bits and return them to their places in the box. Take a rounded or chipped bit out of use.
Warnings:
- Wear safety glasses, ear defenders and a respirator; drilling concrete releases respirable crystalline silica dust.
- Locate electrical cables and pipes before drilling.
- The bit and the drilled material get hot: do not touch the bit straight after drilling.
- Use the auxiliary handle; if the bit jams, it turns the machine with force.
- The bits are not suitable for drilling metal, wood or tile with hammer action.
- Remove the battery or plug before changing the bit.
- The lid and edges of the metal box are sharp.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
What sizes are in the set? The bit diameters are between 5–12 mm and the lengths are 110 mm and 160 mm.
What does a four-cutter tip mean? In addition to the two main cutters, the tip has two extra cutters that spread the impact more widely and keep the hole round even at reinforcement.
Do the bits fit an SDS-max machine? No. The shank is SDS-plus and only fits an SDS-plus chuck.
Which length should I use? The short 110 mm bit is stiffer and more accurate in shallow holes; the 160 mm bit reaches deeper holes and through thicker structures.
Can the bits drill tile? Not with hammer drilling. Tile is drilled with a tile or diamond bit without hammer action.
Recycling instructions:
Take bits and the metal box that are no longer used to metal collection; the carbide tip is recycled with the steel. Sort the cardboard outer packaging into carton collection.
