Description
Blue Dolphin fibreglass tape 48 mm x 45 m (Model FSH 6×8) is a high-performance self-adhesive joint tape developed especially for reinforcing the joints of plasterboard structures and repairing various surface damage. The core of the product is a leno-woven fibreglass mesh, which gives exceptional dimensional stability. Unlike many traditional meshes, this tape does not stretch or shrink with changes in humidity or temperature, which ensures a long-lasting joint and prevents hairline cracks from forming in the finished surface.
The tape is attached with a high-quality acrylic-based adhesive. This adhesive technology is optimised to give strong initial adhesion to the paper surface of plasterboard without separate pre-gluing, which speeds up work considerably. The adhesive is solvent-free and designed to withstand alkaline conditions, so it keeps its properties even when in contact with cement-based and alkaline fillers. The product has been tested to withstand most chemicals and solvents typically found on construction sites.
A special feature of the FSH 6×8 model is its optimised mesh structure, where the density of the warp and weft (8 x 6 mesh/inch) is designed to maximise the penetration of filler while keeping high tensile strength. The tape’s tensile strength of 9.0 N/mm in both the longitudinal and transverse directions guarantees that the joint withstands structural stress without tearing. The “No sliding effect” property of the product ensures that the tape stays in place when filler is applied and does not slide under the trowel.
This 45 metre roll is an ideal size for both large sites and individual renovation jobs. The thinness and flexibility of the tape allow inconspicuous joints, reducing the amount of finishing filler and sanding needed. The product is white, which makes it easier to cover with light-coloured fillers and paints.
Intended use:
-
Joining plasterboard joints (Joining plasterboards) The main use of the product is binding the joints between plasterboards. The self-adhesive mesh is applied directly over the joint between the boards and acts as reinforcement inside the filler layer. This prevents the joint from opening as the structures move.
-
Repairing cracks and scratches (Ideal for scratches and crackings) The product is excellent for renovation jobs where old wall or ceiling surfaces have cracks. The tape bridges the crack and spreads the stress over a wider area, preventing the crack from reappearing through the new paint surface.
-
General patching and repair (Repairing) Can be used to patch various holes and damage on plasterboard, rendered and concrete surfaces. The mesh structure binds the repair mortar effectively in place.
Features:
The technical values below are based on information stated by the manufacturer according to the FSH 6×8 standard.
-
Material: Fibreglass mesh (Mesh) – Non-combustible, durable carrier.
-
Weave: Leno weave – A special weave that improves the stability of the mesh and prevents fraying.
-
Adhesive: Acrylic adhesive – Solvent-free, strong adhesion and good chemical resistance.
-
Tensile strength: ≥ 9.0 N/mm (longitudinal and transverse) – A very high strength class for joint tapes.
-
Elongation: ≥ 0.8% – Minimal elongation ensures the joint does not move.
-
Mesh size: Warp: 8 mesh/inch, Weft: 6 mesh/inch (Tolerance +/- 8%) – Optimised mesh density.
-
Weight per square metre: 48.5 g/m² (+/- 5g/m²) – A sturdy material that is still thin enough for inconspicuous jointing.
-
Chemical resistance: High resistance to most chemicals and solvents.
-
Dimensional stability: Does not stretch or shrink, stays stable (Stable).
Blue Dolphin fibreglass tape 48 mm x 45 m instructions for use:
1. Surface preparation Make sure the surface is clean, dry and free of grease, oil or other impurities. Dust significantly weakens the adhesion of the adhesive, so wipe the edges of the plasterboard with a damp cloth if necessary and let them dry.
2. Applying the tape Place the Blue Dolphin fibreglass tape in the centre of the joint. Press the tape firmly onto the surface along its whole length. Thanks to the “No sliding effect” property, the tape stays in place and does not slide during application. Cut the tape with a sharp knife or a trowel.
3. Applying filler Apply plasterboard filler or jointing compound over the tape. Press hard with the trowel so that the filler penetrates the mesh openings and fills the joint completely. The open structure of the mesh (8×6 mesh) lets the filler pass through freely.
4. Finishing Smooth the surface and let it dry. If necessary, apply a second coat of filler over a wider area to feather out the joint. Sand the dry surface smooth before painting.
Warnings:
-
Storage conditions: The product is sensitive to incorrect storage conditions. Store the tape in its original packaging in a cool, dry place. The temperature must not exceed 21 °C (70 °F) or the relative humidity 50%.
-
Shelf life: The product should be used within 12 months of the date of delivery to guarantee optimal adhesion.
-
Direct sunlight: Protect the product from direct sunlight during storage, as UV radiation can weaken the adhesive and the fibreglass.
-
Responsibility for use: The user must always make sure the product is suitable for the intended use before starting work.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
What does leno weave mean?
Leno weave is a special way of weaving the fibreglass threads so that they lock into each other. This prevents the mesh from fraying when it is cut and makes the mesh firmer to apply than a traditional plain weave.
Is this tape suitable for wet rooms?
The product withstands moisture and alkaline substances, but in wet rooms you must always follow the instructions of the manufacturer of the waterproofing and board system for that room. The fibreglass tape itself does not act as waterproofing.
Why must the tape be stored below 21 degrees?
The properties of the acrylic adhesive are best preserved in cool conditions. Storage that is too hot can cause the adhesive to “bleed” or dry out in the roll, which makes the roll harder to unwind or weakens adhesion to the wall.
Recycling instructions:
-
Product: Used fibreglass tape (with or without filler) is construction waste or mixed waste. It cannot be burned in an ordinary furnace because fibreglass does not melt, and it does not belong in plastic collection.
-
Packaging: Remove the plastic wrap and sort it for plastic collection. The cardboard core (if any) is sorted for cardboard collection.
