Description
The Schwan adhesive spreader is a spreading tool with a notched blade that ensures controlled, repeatable spreading thickness of adhesives and compounds in floor and wall installations. The spreader is suitable, for example, for installing ceramic tiles, stone materials, parquet, vinyl planks and textile carpets, and for the base work stages of various levelling compounds and waterproofing.
The notching determines the amount spread and the pattern. Several notch profiles (e.g. U, V or square notch) and notch sizes are available for different adhesives and substrates. The wide range of sizes and blade materials (e.g. stainless steel/steel) lets you choose the right combination for the job without wasting method or material.
The ergonomic handle (wood or composite depending on the model) gives a secure grip and a good feel for the substrate, which makes it easier to keep the pressure even. The stiff, straight-ground blade forms uniform adhesive ridges that improve coverage and the absence of air under the tile or covering. A correctly chosen notch allows the consumption stated by the manufacturer and helps achieve the required contact area.
The Schwan range includes variants for different uses: smaller spreaders suit corners and repairs, wider spreaders give fast coverage on large surfaces. Depending on the model, the blade can be replaced, which makes maintenance easier and extends the life of the product.
Intended use:
-
Tile and stone installation: The notched blade forms uniform adhesive ridges for ceramic and natural stone tiles. The right notch prevents voids and improves adhesion, especially with large tiles and on uneven substrates. Spread the adhesive with the spreader recommended by the manufacturer and check coverage with a lift test.
-
Wood and parquet adhesives: Elastic and 1-component/2-component parquet adhesives need a controlled spreading height. A suitable notch size ensures the right consumption, fills unevenness in the substrate and keeps the open time of the adhesive. Work in sections so that the adhesive surface does not skin over before installation.
-
Vinyl, linoleum and textile carpets: A finer notch or lower ridge height prevents adhesive from squeezing out of the seams. Even spreading reduces bubbling and improves the final surface quality, especially for thin coverings.
-
Base work for waterproofing and moisture protection systems: Spreading pre-treatment and primer compounds with a straight blade or a fine notch supports the consistency and adhesion of the following layers.

Instructions for use and maintenance (on the packaging/label)
Features:
-
Notch: U/V/square (depends on model) – Determines the amount spread and the ridge pattern; optimises adhesive consumption.
-
Notch size: depends on variant – Matched to the viscosity of the adhesive, the size of the tile/covering and the flatness of the substrate.
-
Blade material: stainless steel/steel (depends on model) – The straight edge and stiffness ensure an even ridge.
-
Width and length: depends on variant – Narrow models for precise work, wide ones for fast coverage.
-
Handle: wood or composite (depends on model) – Secure grip and comfortable feel in use.
-
Uses: tiles, stone, parquet, vinyl, textile carpets – Controlled spreading of adhesives and compounds.
-
Compatibility: cement-based, reactive and dispersion adhesives – Choose the notch according to the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.
Schwan adhesive spreader: instructions for use:
-
Substrate: Clean and level the substrate. Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s moisture content and temperature limits.
-
Choosing the notch: Choose the notch size and profile according to the adhesive, covering and substrate. Check coverage with a lift test (≥80–100% depending on the tile type).
-
Spreading: Hold the spreader at about a 45° angle; keep the pressure even. Draw the adhesive in parallel strokes and avoid “sawing”, which changes the ridges.
-
Open time: Install the covering within the open time of the adhesive. Adhesive left open too long weakens adhesion.
-
Cleaning: Wipe off fresh adhesive residues with a product recommended by the manufacturer. Dried residues are removed mechanically.
-
Maintenance: Remove set adhesive from the blade carefully; straighten the blade only if this is permitted. Store dry and flat.
Warnings:
-
The wrong notch can cause incomplete coverage or excessive squeeze-out, so follow the adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations.
-
The edge of the blade is sharp: wear protective gloves and beware of cuts.
-
Work with good ventilation and follow the safety instructions for the adhesives (SDS).
-
Keep the product out of the reach of children.
-
Do not use a damaged or bent spreader, as it changes the amount spread.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Which notch should be chosen for large tiles?
Usually a larger notch size and a square/U profile improve coverage. Confirm the choice from the adhesive manufacturer’s table and do a lift test.
Can I use the same spreader for parquet adhesive and mortar?
Yes, if the notch and blade meet the requirements of the compound. A separate, larger notch is often recommended for parquet adhesive.
Why do the ridges collapse or coverage fall short?
Too small a notch, the wrong angle or too long an open time. Check the absorbency of the substrate and the adhesive instructions.
How often should the spreader be replaced?
When the blade becomes rounded or the notch wears, the amount spread changes. Replace the spreader if coverage is not achieved with the same settings.
