Description
The BeaverCraft BW1 Walnut is a carefully selected set of carving blanks made of European walnut (Carpathian Walnut). This material is known for its refined, natural grain pattern and pleasant texture, which ranges from rich matt brown to light beige. Walnut is an excellent choice for carvers who want their work to have a valuable, finished look without heavy use of surface finishes.
The set is designed as a versatile material pack that lets the carver complete several different projects. The hardness of the wood is moderate, which makes it an ideal material for refining carving technique; it offers just the right resistance compared with softer woods such as lime, but can still be worked with hand tools. Every blank in the set is checked for structural integrity, and they have no cracks, chips or knots that could hinder the carving process.
The pieces in the BW10 Walnut set are supplied sawn to set dimensions, which speeds up starting a project. The wood is excellent for both rough shaping and delicate finishing of details. The dense structure of walnut allows a very precise finish and it polishes beautifully, which makes it a popular choice for decorative items and works of art.

Walnut instructions for use:
As a material, walnut is slightly harder than traditional lime, so keep the following points in mind when working it for the best result:
Before starting, make sure your carving tools (knives and chisels) are very sharp. Walnut is denser, so a dull blade can slip and cause dangerous situations or tear the surface of the wood. Always carve with the grain where possible. Recognising the direction of the grain is important with walnut to avoid splitting, especially when making small details.
When finishing, walnut is a very rewarding material. Sand the surface with progressively finer sandpaper (e.g. grits 120-240-400). Finally, we recommend treating it with a clear wood oil, wax or varnish, which brings out the deep colour and grain pattern of the wood while protecting the finished piece.
Warnings:
Note the following safety factors when working with the product:
- Always use sharp tools; a dull tool needs more force and increases the risk of slipping.
- Wear cut-resistant gloves or a thumb guard while carving.
- Wood dust can irritate the airways. Wear a respirator when sanding dry walnut.
- Make sure the work area is well lit for steps that call for precision.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Is walnut difficult to carve?
Walnut is harder than lime, for example, but it can still be worked well with hand tools. It needs a little more force and sharp tools, but rewards the carver with durability and a beautiful surface.
Is this set suitable for carving spoons?
The pieces in the pack are rather short (100 mm long) for traditional everyday spoons, but they are well suited for small ladles, spice spoons or decorative miniature spoons.
Does the wood need treatment before carving?
No. The wood is supplied dry and ready to carve. Surface treatment is done only on the finished work.
