Narex drawknife

Traditional woodworking tool for efficient shaping and cutting of wood. Fitted with a durable forged blade and ergonomic, lacquered beech handles. Includes a leather blade guard for safe storage and transport.

Unit: pcs Brand:

Description

The Narex drawknife is a traditional, essential hand tool for demanding woodworking. It is designed for efficient removal, shaping and finishing of wood with a pulling movement. The tool combines traditional craftsmanship with modern materials technology, giving professionals a reliable solution for all kinds of carving tasks. Its sturdy construction is designed to withstand continuous use in demanding working environments.

The heart of the tool is its forged blade, made of high-quality Cr steel (chrome steel). This choice of material ensures excellent durability and a long life for the blade. The blade is hardened to 55 HRc hardness, which is an optimal balance between edge retention and ease of sharpening. This hardness guarantees that the blade withstands even hard use without chipping, while still being possible to sharpen to a razor edge with normal sharpening tools.

Comfort and control are central to the design of the Narex drawknife. The tool has ergonomically shaped handles made of genuine beech. The wooden handles are stained and finished with a durable lacquer, which improves the appearance of the tool and also protects the wood from moisture and dirt, extending the life of the handles. The shape of the handles allows a firm, natural grip, which reduces hand fatigue during long periods of work and improves precision.

The drawknife comes with a high-quality leather blade guard. This accessory is essential for both safety and protection of the blade. The guard prevents accidental cuts when handling or carrying the tool and protects the delicate cutting edge from knocks and blunting during storage. This ensures that the tool is always ready to use when you need it.

The Narex drawknife is a sturdy, reliable tool that meets the needs of professional joiners, carvers and restorers. Its high-quality materials, such as forged chrome steel and finished beech handles, combined with a practical blade guard, make it a long-lasting investment for any professional workshop that values traditional working methods and durable tools.

Intended use:

  • Debarking and rough shaping: The drawknife is an excellent tool for debarking logs (removing the bark) and quickly rough-shaping a blank. It lets you remove large amounts of material efficiently by pulling the tool towards you. This makes it ideal for log construction, making fence posts or the early stages of large carvings, for example, where fast material removal is needed before finer finishing.
  • Finer shaping and chamfering: Although the tool is suitable for rough work, its sharp blade and good control also allow more precise shaping tasks. It is commonly used for chamfering edges, creating curved surfaces and thinning pieces in a controlled way. When shaping chair legs or tool handles, for example, the drawknife gives an excellent feel for the wood grain.
  • Traditional joinery and restoration: In many traditional woodworking crafts, such as boatbuilding, making cartwheels or restoring old furniture, the drawknife is an irreplaceable tool. It lets you create organic shapes that are hard to achieve with modern power tools. In restoration, it is useful for removing old finishes or shaping replacement parts for damaged wood to match the original style.

Narex drawknife instructions for use:

Getting started: Although the drawknife is supplied pre-sharpened, for professional use, finishing the edge (honing and polishing) before first use is recommended for the best possible cutting result. Remove the blade guard carefully.

Technique: The drawknife is generally used by pulling the tool towards you with both hands. Make sure the workpiece is firmly clamped, for example in a workbench or a carving horse. Take a firm grip on both handles. You can control the thickness of the shaving by adjusting the angle of the blade: a steeper angle removes more material, while a shallower angle is suitable for fine adjustment. Whenever possible, work with the grain to avoid tearing the wood. The tool can be used bevel up or bevel down depending on the cutting action and control you want; try both ways to find the grip best suited to the job.

Care and maintenance: Clean wood dust and dirt off the tool after use. If you are working with damp or resinous wood, it is worth wiping the blade lightly with an oiled cloth to prevent corrosion. Always store the drawknife in a dry place with the supplied leather blade guard fitted.

Sharpening: When the blade goes blunt, it needs sharpening. Sharpening can be done with water stones, oil stones or diamond sharpeners. Keep the original blade angle when sharpening. Remember to remove the burr from the opposite side of the blade with a fine stone or leather strop at the end of sharpening.

Warnings:

Take care when using the drawknife, as its blade is very sharp and can cause serious cuts.

  • Sharp edge: Always handle the tool with care. Never test the sharpness with your finger.
  • Working direction: The drawknife is usually pulled towards the user. Make sure you have a stable working position and a controlled movement so that the tool does not slip towards your body.
  • Clamping the workpiece: Always make sure the piece of wood being worked is clamped firmly and cannot move before you start work. A moving piece can make you lose control of the tool.
  • Protective equipment: Always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying chips. Wearing work gloves is recommended, but make sure they do not weaken your grip on the handles.
  • Storage: Always use the blade guard when the tool is not in use, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ):

Q: Is the drawknife ready to use straight out of the box?

A: The tool is supplied with a basic sharpening and is usable, but for demanding professional use we recommend honing and polishing the edge before first use for optimal sharpness.

Q: Is this drawknife suitable for hardwood?

A: Yes, the forged Cr steel and 55 HRc hardness make the blade durable enough for working hardwoods such as oak or birch.

Q: How do I look after the beech handles?

A: The handles are lacquered, so they need no special care in normal conditions. If necessary, they can be cleaned with a damp cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure of the handles to water.

Q: How do I sharpen the drawknife?

A: Sharpening is done with sharpening stones (water, oil or diamond stones), keeping the original blade angle. As the shape of the blade can vary, you may need to use slip stones or narrow sharpening tools to sharpen the whole length of the blade evenly.
