Description
The Nordic splitting axe 37 cm / 950 g is designed for efficient log splitting and field conditions. At the heart of the tool is a head forged from semi-polished carbon steel that combines good bite with sharpness that is easy to maintain. The widened splitting geometry opens the wood fibres quickly, so the blade does not jam as easily and repeated blows stay effortless.
The 37 cm oak handle gives more length and leverage than short hiking axes, but keeps the axe controllable and packable. Oak as a material gives a natural grip and withstands repeated stress well. The wrist strap at the end of the handle adds safety and makes it easier to hang up.
The 950 g head mass produces an effective blow for energy-demanding chopping. The semi-polished blade surface reduces friction as the split opens and is quick to clean after use. The supplied leather sheath protects the blade during transport and storage and prevents accidental contact.
As a whole, the axe is a balanced solution for yard, cottage and wilderness use, where more power is needed in a compact size. It is suitable for splitting firewood, limbing trees and roughly shaping wood blanks before finishing with other tools.
Intended use
-
Splitting firewood and making logs: The 37 cm handle and 950 g head weight produce an effective blow that opens logs quickly, even from dense-grained wood. The widened head reduces jamming, which speeds up the working rhythm and reduces energy use. Use a sturdy chopping block and make use of short, controlled swings for repeatability.
-
Wilderness and camp use: The compact length fits in a backpack or pulk, and the leather sheath allows safe transport with other gear. The axe can be used to limb branches, handle firewood and shape camp structures. The oak handle gives a good grip even in cool, damp conditions, and the wrist strap prevents accidental drops on uneven terrain.
-
Woodwork and rough shaping: The semi-polished carbon steel blade bites into the wood in a controlled way, which makes fast rough shaping of blanks easier before finer finishing. The geometry is particularly suited to splitting, but the front of the blade also allows more precise blows and guided cutting when working the ends of logs or bevels, for example.
-
Yard and maintenance tasks: Suitable for cutting branches, splitting small trunks and looking after yard trees. The extra length compared with short hiking axes adds leverage, but the axe stays agile in tight spots. This reduces the risk of hitting surrounding structures and makes it easier to work in a woodshed or log store, for example.

Nordic splitting axe instructions for use
Before use: Check the fixing of the head, the integrity of the handle and the condition of the wrist strap. Remove the leather sheath only in the work area. Choose a sturdy chopping block and make sure the striking area is clear.
Working: Use a two-handed grip for blows that need power. Stand the wood upright on a block and aim the blow at the split. Let the mass of the head do the work and avoid over-controlled swings. If the blade jams, do not twist it; free it by tapping the opposite side or using a wedge.
Maintenance: Clean and dry the blade after use. Light oiling prevents corrosion in carbon steel. Sharpen with the original bevel from coarse to fine and remove burrs. Sand and oil the oak handle when needed; check for cracks and replace a worn handle.
Storage and transport: Always fit the leather sheath for transport and storage. Store in a dry, ventilated place, away from other edged tools.
Warnings
-
The blade is sharp: wear safety glasses, gloves and sturdy footwear.
-
Make sure the striking area is clear; keep bystanders at least 5 m away.
-
Do not use with a damaged handle or a loose head.
-
Do not chop stone, metal or frozen pieces.
-
Keep the blade covered during transport; store out of the reach of children.
-
Dry and oil the blade after use: carbon steel can rust.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What is the difference between a splitting hatchet and a basic hiking axe?
A splitting axe has a widened blade geometry and a greater mass (950 g), which opens the wood fibres more effectively. It is optimised for making logs, while a basic hiking axe focuses on versatility and more precise shaping.
Is the 37 cm length suitable for carrying in a backpack?
Yes. 37 cm is still a packable size, but it gives clearly more leverage than 25–30 cm axes. The leather sheath allows safe carrying in a backpack.
How is the blade sharpened correctly?
Keep the original bevel. Sharpen with a file/whetstones from coarse to fine, remove burrs and finish with light honing. Finally, a thin layer of oil to prevent corrosion.
Can the axe be used on wet wood?
Yes, but wet wood increases friction and can increase jamming. The widened head helps, but always use a sturdy block and controlled blows.
When should the handle be replaced?
If the handle has cracks, excessive wear or looseness at the head fixing, it must be replaced immediately for safety.
