Description
The Painter G04 series varnish brush 90% TOPS is a finishing tool developed especially for solvent-based paints and varnishes. This varnish brush is designed to ensure even transfer and spreading of solvent- and oil-based finishes onto the material being treated.
The bristle head consists of 90% TOPS mixed bristle, which combines synthetic fibres and natural bristle. This construction uses the natural ability of natural bristle to hold oil- and solvent-based products, while the synthetic fibre keeps the brush in shape and firm in long use. The 90% TOPS rating means that a large share of the bristles are full length, which maximises paint holding capacity.
The handle of the brush is made of FSC-certified beech and finished with lacquer. The lacquered surface repels paint and varnish splashes, which stops products soaking into the wood and makes the tool easier to keep clean after use. The shape supports a steady grip in work that calls for precision.
The bristles are fixed to the handle with a tin-plated steel ferrule. The G04 series varnish brush 90% TOPS is available in several widths from 1 inch to 3 inches, so you can choose a suitable width for different applications such as panels, furniture or other wooden structures.
Intended use:
- Solvent-based paints: Designed for applying oil and alkyd paints. The mixed bristle holds paint and spreads it evenly over the surface.
- Varnishing: Suitable for brushing solvent-based varnishes. The structure of the bristles helps achieve an even film thickness.
- Wood oils and impregnating agents: Can be used for applying oils and other solvent-based protective products to wooden surfaces.

Painter varnish brush 90% TOPS instructions for use:
Before first use, brush the brush lightly by hand to remove loose dust or individual loose bristles. Dip the brush into the product no more than a third of the bristle length, so that the liquid does not run into the ferrule and down to the handle.
During breaks in work, protect the brush from drying out by wrapping it tightly in plastic or keeping it in a storage liquid or solvent intended for the product used.
Clean the varnish brush immediately after use. For cleaning, use the solvent recommended by the manufacturer of the chemical applied, such as mineral turpentine or white spirit. Once the paint or varnish has been removed, also wash the brush with soapy water, rinse thoroughly and leave it to dry with the bristles pointing down or hanging from the handle.
Warnings:
Make sure the room is ventilated when using solvent-based paints, varnishes or wood stains. Wear protective equipment according to the safety instructions of the manufacturer of the chemical used. Do not leave the brush standing on its bristles in a cleaning container for long periods, so that the fibres do not bend permanently. Note the risk of spontaneous combustion if the brush is used with oxidising oils (e.g. linseed oil).
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Can this varnish brush be used for water-based paints?
This varnish brush with 90% TOPS bristles is designed and optimised for solvent-based products. Water-based paints may make the natural bristle swell, which changes the shape of the brush and affects the finish. A fully synthetic brush is recommended for water-based paints.
What does 90% TOPS mean?
90% TOPS is a bristle rating stating that 90 per cent of the bristles in the brush are full length. This construction maximises the brush’s ability to absorb and hold paint, which reduces the need to dip into the paint container and ensures an even paint film.
How do I clean the brush after using oil paint?
First clean the brush with the solvent recommended by the product manufacturer, for example white spirit. Then wash the brush with warm water and mild soap to remove solvent residue from the fibres.
Recycling instructions:
A cleaned brush is sorted as mixed waste. If the brush has not been completely cleaned of hazardous chemicals, it must be disposed of as hazardous waste according to local waste regulations. Packaging materials are sorted into plastic or cardboard collection according to the packaging material. If the brush has been used with self-igniting oils, immerse it in a closable container of water before disposal to eliminate the risk of spontaneous combustion.
