Description
The Tajima Plumb-Rite PZB-400 is a plumb line with a self-retracting 4.5 metre line and a 400 g weighted, fast-settling bob. The case can be attached to the work surface in three different ways: with a setting pin in wood or plasterboard, a magnet on steel or a hook on a nail or stud, so one person can find plumb without a helper.
The 400 g mass and shape of the bob stop it swinging quickly, and the reel brake keeps the line taut at the length you want. The line retracts into the case automatically, so it does not tangle in transport or wear against the floor. The case is impact-resistant plastic and the bob is steel.
The tool is used to transfer a vertical line from ceiling to floor and to check that wall surfaces are plumb: for aligning studs, door frames, cabinets, pipe runs and light points, and in masonry and tiling. The plumb line works without batteries or calibration, so it is a basic tool like a tape measure that stands up to site use.
The Plumb-Rite complements laser instruments when you need a physical reference point, for example to mark a ceiling fixing point on the floor. For marking out construction lines, the same range includes the Kapro chalk line reel 214 30m and for checking level, the Kapro spirit level Smarty 10 cm.
Intended use and suitability:
A plumb line transfers a point vertically from one level to another and shows how far a surface deviates from plumb.
- Framing and frame work: check that a stud or frame is plumb by hanging the case at the top with the pin and measuring the distance to the line at the bottom.
- Transferring a point from ceiling to floor: aligning a light, hanging or drilling point on the floor; magnetic attachment to a steel stud or bracket.
- Masonry and tiling: vertical reference for a corner or a row of tiles; the taut line also works as a straight guide.
- Steel structures: the magnet attaches the case to a beam or column without drilling.
Package contents:
- Tajima Plumb-Rite PZB-400 reel case with line, 4.5 m

- Three ways to attach: setting pin (wood, plasterboard), magnet (steel), hook (nail, stud).
- One-person use: the case stays on the surface without a helper.
- No batteries, no calibration: works in all temperatures and lighting conditions.

Tajima Plumb-Rite PZB-400 instructions for use:
Attaching: Press the setting pin into wood or plasterboard at the height you want, or place the case on a steel surface with the magnet, or hang the hook on a nail or stud. The edge of the case or the pin marks the top point of the line.
Measuring: Pull the bob down and let the line run out; lock the reel brake when the bob hangs freely a few centimetres above the floor. Wait for the bob to stop, then mark the point under the tip of the bob, or measure the distance from the line to the surface being checked at the top and bottom: the difference shows the deviation from plumb.
Rewinding and care: Release the brake and guide the bob into the case by hand as the line retracts. Wipe the line dry before rewinding; do not let the bob strike the case. Store in a dry place.
Warnings:
- The bob is sharp and heavy: do not let it drop freely, and keep feet and anyone working below away from under the bob.
- Magnet: keep away from pacemakers, magnetic cards and electronics.
- The setting pin is sharp: handle with care and keep out of the reach of children.
- Strong wind or a draught makes the bob swing; measure in a sheltered space.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
How long is the line on the Tajima Plumb-Rite PZB-400? 4.5 metres; enough for a normal ceiling to floor and a two-storey hall.
How can I attach the plumb line to a wall on my own? With the setting pin into wood or plasterboard, the magnet on steel or the hook on a nail; the case stays in place without a helper.
Why does the bob weigh 400 g? A heavy, shaped bob settles quickly and keeps the line taut even in a slight draught.
Can the plumb line be used as a marking line? The taut line works as a vertical guide, but it holds no chalk; use a separate chalk line reel for marking.
Does a laser replace a plumb line? A laser gives a line, a plumb line gives a physical point and works without batteries and in bright sunshine.
Recycling instructions:
Sort the cardboard and plastic packaging into carton and plastic collection. Sort a Tajima Plumb-Rite PZB-400 at the end of its life: the steel bob and magnet go to metal collection, the plastic case and line to mixed waste or energy waste.
