Description
Yato ratchet 1/2″ 255 mm offset is a ratchet for sockets with a 1/2″ (12.7 mm) square drive. The ratchet mechanism has 72 teeth, giving a working angle of 5°: the ratchet works in tight spots where the handle can only move a little. The body is made of CrV 6140 chrome vanadium steel, and the surface is satin chrome plated.
The handle is offset, which lifts your hand off the work surface and gives room for your fingers when the socket is in a recess or close to other parts. The handle surface is two-component PP/TPR plastic: a hard polypropylene core and a soft TPR surface that keeps its grip even with oily hands.
The drive has a quick release: a push button releases the socket, so sockets can be changed with one hand without pulling or twisting. The direction of rotation is changed with the reversing lever on the head.
The Yato ratchet 1/2″ is 255 mm long, so the leverage is enough for ordinary automotive, machinery and construction installation with 1/2″ sockets. The ratchet fits 1/2″ sockets and extension bars from Yato and other manufacturers, for example the sockets of the Yato socket set 173 pcs set.
Yato ratchet 1/2″, intended use and suitability:
The ratchet is intended for tightening and loosening bolts and nuts by hand with 1/2″ sockets.
- Car repair workshops and servicing: Loosening and tightening wheel bolts and chassis and engine fixings, where the 1/2″ drive and 255 mm leverage give enough torque.
- Tight installation spots: 72 teeth and a 5° working angle let you work when the handle can only move a few degrees; the offset handle keeps your fingers off the work surface.
- Machinery and equipment installation: Bolts on industrial and agricultural machinery, where the satin chrome CrV body withstands oil and dirt.
- Construction and steelwork: Tightening anchor bolts, fixings and scaffold bolts with 1/2″ sockets.
- Adding to a socket set: Replaces or supplements the ratchet of a socket set when a ratchet with quick release and an offset handle is needed.
Package contents:

Yato ratchet 1/2″ features:
- 72 teeth, 5° working angle: The fine teeth work in tight spots where handle movement is restricted.
- Quick release: A push button releases the socket; the socket stays locked during work and comes off with one press.
- Reversing lever: The tightening and loosening direction is changed with a lever on the head of the ratchet.
- Offset handle: Lifts your hand off the work surface and improves leverage in recesses.
- CrV 6140 steel: The chrome vanadium steel body and gear are intended for continuous professional use.
- Satin chrome finish: The matt surface does not reflect light and resists corrosion.
- PP/TPR handle: The two-component handle gives a secure grip even with wet or oily hands.

Yato ratchet 1/2″ instructions for use:
Choose a 1/2″ socket that matches the size of the bolt or nut and press it onto the drive until the quick release clicks. Select the direction of rotation with the reversing lever: clockwise to tighten, anticlockwise to loosen. Place the socket straight on the bolt and turn the handle; the ratchet mechanism returns the handle without the socket coming off the bolt.
Remove the socket by pressing the quick release button and pulling the socket off. Wipe oil and dirt off the ratchet after use and store it dry. Add a drop of thin machine oil to the ratchet mechanism from time to time; do not dismantle the mechanism yourself.
Warnings:
- No extension on the handle: Do not extend the ratchet with a pipe or other extension or strike it with a hammer; overloading can break the gear and cause an accident.
- Not for powered use: The ratchet is a hand tool; it must not be used in an impact wrench or drill, or with impact sockets on a machine.
- Use a suitable socket: A socket of the wrong size or a worn socket can slip and round off the bolt. Wear safety glasses.
- No electrical insulation: The ratchet is not VDE insulated; it must not be used on live equipment.
- Damaged tool: Take it out of use if the teeth slip, the quick release does not hold or the handle is cracked.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
What do 72 teeth mean on a ratchet and why does it matter?
The number of teeth determines the working angle: 360° / 72 = 5°. The smaller the angle, the less movement it takes to reach the next tooth, so the ratchet works in tighter spots than, for example, a 45-tooth (8°) ratchet.
How does the quick release of the Yato ratchet 1/2″ work?
The drive has a spring-loaded locking ball that holds the socket in place. A push button on the head of the ratchet releases the ball, so the socket comes off without force.
Which sockets does the Yato ratchet 1/2″ fit?
All sockets, extension bars and universal joints with a 1/2″ (12.7 mm) square drive, whatever the manufacturer.
Why is the handle offset?
The offset handle lifts your hand off the work surface and gives your fingers room when the socket is in a recess or there is little space around the bolt.
Recycling instructions:
- Tool: The steel body goes to metal collection; the plastic handle can be left on if local metal collection allows it, otherwise it goes to mixed waste.
- Packaging: Paper and cardboard to cardboard collection, any plastic packaging to plastic collection.
