Description
The Yato saw chain sharpener set is an 18V cordless saw chain sharpener designed for precise mechanical grinding of the saw chains of chainsaws and brush cutters. The device is powered by an electric motor that turns the grinding disc at a 6500 min⁻¹ rotational speed. This speed ensures fast material removal from the steel cutting teeth without excessive frictional heat, which helps prevent the chain teeth losing their hardness. The low 1.7 kg weight of the device (without battery) makes it easy to move and removes the dependence on a fixed mains supply.
The sharpener uses a standard-size grinding disc with a 108 mm outer diameter, a centre hole of 23.0 mm and a thickness of 3.2 mm. This disc is suitable for sharpening most 1/4″, 3/8″ LP and .325″ saw chains. The mechanical chain locking system of the device anchors the saw chain firmly in the guide rail during grinding. The lock eliminates vibration and sideways movement, which guarantees identical geometry for every cutting tooth and restores the chain’s original cutting efficiency.
The body of the machine and the precision-machined swivel table allow stepless adjustment of the sharpening angle in the range 0–35 degrees. A clear integrated scale ensures that the left and right rows of teeth on the chain can be ground to exactly the same angle. The control handle on the top of the device is sized for optimal leverage, which allows precise, controlled feeding of the disc to the cutting surface of the tooth, with the depth stop halting the movement at the set depth.
The YT-84980 is supplied as a ready set that includes a 2.0 Ah Li-Ion battery (YT-82842) and a mains charger. The battery belongs to the Yato 18V system, which makes it fully cross-compatible with other Yato cordless tools of the same voltage range. Lithium-ion technology discharges energy at an even voltage right to the end of the battery charge without a memory effect that weakens capacity, guaranteeing consistent sharpening power in field conditions.
Intended use and suitability:
The device is designed for maintaining saw chains in conditions that require absolute dimensional accuracy and portability, eliminating the human margin of error associated with hand filing.
- Forestry sites and logging areas: Allows dull saw chains to be machine-sharpened directly on site without a generator or inverter. Reduces the need for spare chains and shortens sawing breaks.
- Equipment and machinery hire companies: Suitable for standardised, fast servicing of hire machine chains on a service bench. Ensures accurate quality control of every saw returned.
- Mobile service equipment: The compact construction of the machine allows fixed installation at the workstation of a service van, so chain servicing can be done on the road or at the customer’s premises.
Package contents:
The set includes all the components needed for immediate use.

Yato YT-84980 instructions for use:
Installation and the sharpening process must follow the principles of mechanical machining to ensure an accurate result and a long life for the device.
1. Mount the device on a level workbench with screws or clamps. Fit the 108 mm grinding disc to the spindle with the supplied tool and check that the locking nut is tight.
2. Thread the saw chain into the guide rail. Set the desired sharpening angle (e.g. 30 degrees) on the swivel table scale according to the chain manufacturer’s recommendations.
3. Lock the chain in place. Adjust the rear stop of the device so that the disc, switched off, lightly touches the cutting surface of the tooth. Set the depth stop with the screw so that the disc cannot bite into the drive link.
4. Insert the charged 18V battery into the grooves of the battery slide until it locks in place.
5. Start the machine and feed the disc into the tooth with a steady movement. Grind with short contacts of 1–2 seconds to prevent overheating.
6. First sharpen all the teeth pointing in the same direction. Release the swivel table, set the opposite angle (e.g. -30 degrees) and repeat the process for the remaining teeth.
Warnings:
Critical safety criteria relating to electromechanical grinding and cordless machines.
- Risk of eye injuries and burns: The disc rotating at 6500 min⁻¹ produces fast-flying, hot metal sparks. Wearing CE-marked safety glasses is mandatory, and the surroundings must be cleared of flammable materials.
- Risk of disc breakage: Never use a grinding disc with visible fractures, cracks or chips. A damaged disc can shatter under centrifugal force.
- Accidental starting: Always remove the battery from the machine before changing the grinding disc, carrying out mechanical maintenance on the device or moving it from its installation site.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Which grinding discs are compatible with the Yato YT-84980 sharpener?
All standard-size sharpening discs with an outer diameter of 108 mm, a centre hole of 23.0 mm and a thickness matching the pitch of the chain being sharpened (typically 3.2 mm) fit the device. Discs of the same dimensions from other manufacturers also fit the standard spindle.
Is the capacity of a 2.0 Ah battery enough for professional use?
The Yato 18V 2.0 Ah battery offers enough capacity to sharpen several standard-size saw chains on one charge. The power consumption of the device is cyclical, because the grinding contact itself lasts only seconds per tooth. Capacity can be increased by using 4.0 Ah or 6.0 Ah Yato 18V batteries.
Is the device suitable for sharpening a .404″ thick harvester chain?
The YT-84980 is optimised for use with 3.2 mm thick discs intended for the most common 1/4″, 3/8″ LP and .325″ chains. Sharpening heavier .404″ harvester chains typically needs a thicker 4.5–4.7 mm disc because of their wider teeth, and this thickness probably does not fit the standard spindle or guard of the device optimally.
Recycling instructions:
Electrical and electronic equipment must not be disposed of with mixed waste. Take the device to an official collection point for waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Tape the terminals of the lithium-ion battery (YT-82842) to prevent short circuits and return it to a separate battery collection point. Sort the packaging materials (cardboard, plastics) into the corresponding recycling points.
