Description
The double-sided BeaverCraft LS5P1 leather strop is designed specifically for maintaining and finishing the edges of spoon knives, hook knives and other curved woodcarving tools. This sharpening board helps remove the burr and polish the cutting edge, which ensures a clean cut and extends the tool’s life between sharpenings. The strop is an essential tool for carvers who regularly use hook blades and want to keep them in optimal working condition without constant hard sharpening.
The body of the strop is made of sturdy ash wood and has an ergonomic handle that gives a good grip while working. Its unique shape is tailored to the various curved profiles of spoon knives and gouges, allowing even treatment along the whole length of the blade. One side of the strop is covered with quality leather, which is used together with polishing compound for final polishing and finishing. The other side has a fixing mechanism for replaceable sandpapers, which allow slightly more aggressive work on the cutting edge or the repair of minor damage before polishing.
The double-sided design makes this tool a versatile solution for edge maintenance. The sandpaper side helps restore sharpness, while the leather side finishes the edge to a mirror-like finish, which reduces friction when carving. Regular stropping prevents the edge from dulling and keeps it cutting longer, which makes carving smoother and safer. The compact size and light weight of 0.4 kg make it an easy tool to carry with you.
Intended use:
- Maintaining spoon knives: The product is designed primarily for the regular sharpening and polishing of the curved blades of spoon knives (hook knives). Its shape allows efficient treatment of the inside of concave blades, removing the burr and restoring sharpness without changing the blade geometry.
- Sharpening hook knives and gouges: The strop is also excellent for finishing hook knives and the various concave gouges used in woodcarving. The specially shaped profile adapts to different curvatures, ensuring even contact along the whole blade.
- Fine-tuning woodcarving tools: The tool is used during woodcarving to keep the edge extremely sharp. Regular stropping removes the microscopic unevenness and burr that form while carving, keeping the cut clean and making the work easier.

BeaverCraft leather strop for spoon knives instructions for use:
Before using the leather side, apply a thin, even layer of the included green polishing compound to the leather surface. You can warm the leather slightly (e.g. with a hairdryer) or add a small drop of oil so the compound spreads better. When polishing, place the cutting edge of the knife against the strop at the same angle as when sharpening. Draw the blade along the strop with the spine leading, never the cutting edge, so that you do not damage the leather. Repeat the movement several times on both sides of the blade until the burr has gone and the edge has a mirror shine. The sandpaper side is used in the same way, with pulling strokes, when the blade needs more work than polishing alone gives. Replace the sandpaper when it becomes less effective. Store the strop in a dry place and protect it from dirt and oil.
Warnings:
- Always use the strop carefully and in a controlled way. Sharp tools can cause serious cuts if they slip.
- Keep your fingers out of the path of the blade.
- Do not press the blade too hard against the strop, so that you do not round the cutting edge or damage the strop.
- Wear safety glasses if you use the sandpaper side and a significant amount of material comes off.
- Keep the tool and polishing compound out of the reach of children.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
- How often should the leather strop be used?: It is recommended to use the strop regularly during carving, for example every 15–30 minutes or when you notice the cutting resistance increasing. Regular use keeps the edge sharp and reduces the need for heavier sharpening.
- Does the leather side always need polishing compound?: Yes, polishing compound is essential for an optimal polishing result. Leather alone removes the burr, but the fine abrasives in the compound give the edge a mirror finish and extreme sharpness.
- Can I also sharpen straight knives with this strop?: Although the strop is shaped for curved blades, its flatter parts can also be used in an emergency to finish straight blades. There are, however, flat strops that are better suited to this purpose for straight blades.
- What grit of sandpaper is included?: The pack typically contains fine sandpaper suitable for maintaining and fine-tuning the cutting edge, not for major sharpening jobs.
Recycling instructions:
The wooden parts can be recycled as wood waste or burned. The leather part is energy waste. Sandpapers and leftover polishing compound are disposed of as mixed waste. Packaging materials (cardboard, plastic) should be recycled at the collection points provided for them.
