Description
The Narex honing guide is designed to improve the accuracy and repeatability of maintaining woodworking tools. This accessory lets you sharpen wood chisels, turning chisels and plane irons so that the edge angles specified by the manufacturer or chosen by the user stay exactly constant throughout the grinding process. Using the guide avoids the errors that easily creep into freehand sharpening, such as rounded edges or wrong bevel angles, which reduce the cutting performance and precision of the tool.
The guide can clamp many different types of blade. As well as normal flat-ended wood chisels, it is compatible with bevel-edged chisels and wider plane irons. The guide clamps the tool firmly in place, so the blade slides evenly across the surface of the sharpening stone. For the best result and to prevent corrosion, honing oil is recommended instead of water for grinding, if the sharpening stone allows it.
Intended use:
The honing guide is intended for maintaining the blades of the following tools:
- Wood chisels: Grinding the cutting edge of flat and bevel-edged chisels to the correct angle.
- Plane irons: Sharpening hand plane irons and making sure they are straight.
- Turning chisels: Maintaining the profiles of certain turning tools.
Package contents:
The product is supplied in an individual pack:
- 1 pcs Narex honing guide
Features:
The technical solutions of the Narex honing guide make sharpening easier:
- Constant angle: Stops the edge angle changing during the grinding stroke, guaranteeing a straight, sharp edge.
- Adjustability: The clamping mechanism adapts to blades of different widths and thicknesses.
- Versatility: Suitable for both straight and bevelled blade profiles.
- Sliding properties: The roller/base of the guide is designed to move without friction over the sharpening stone or base.
Technical specifications:
Physical dimensions of the product:
- Dimensions (L x W x H): 117 mm x 66 mm x 57 mm.
- Compatibility: Wood chisels, bevel-edged chisels, plane irons.
Narex honing guide instructions for use:
The correct technique guarantees a sharp result:
1. Fitting the blade: Loosen the clamping nuts of the guide far enough for the blade to fit between the jaws. Place the blade in the guide and tighten the screws provisionally, but leave them loose for adjustment.
2. Setting the angle: Place the guide on the sharpening stone. Press the edge of the piece being sharpened lightly against the stone and adjust the blade projection (how far the blade sticks out of the guide) by moving it forwards or backwards. The aim is to find a position where there is an angle of about 3 degrees between the bevel of the blade and the stone (known as micro-bevel honing) or the bevel lies fully on the stone, depending on the honing style you want.
3. Locking: Once you have found the correct position, make sure the blade is square to the grooves of the guide and tighten the clamping screws fully.
4. Sharpening: Apply honing oil to the sharpening stone. Press the guide and blade evenly against the stone. Move the assembly back and forth over the stone, using the whole surface of the stone to even out wear. Continue until the blade is sharp.
Warnings:
Note the following points while working:
- Clamping force: Make sure the blade is clamped tightly so that it cannot move during sharpening, which could spoil the edge angle.
- Sharpening stone wear: Use the whole surface of the sharpening stone so that the stone does not wear hollow where the roller or blade of the guide runs.
- Rust: Clean and oil the guide and the tools after use, especially if you use water stones.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Can this sharpen narrow chisels?
Yes, the jaws of the guide also clamp around narrower chisels, as long as they are set straight along the grooves.
How do I know the correct sharpening angle?
The correct angle depends on how far the blade is pushed out of the guide (projection). The further out the blade, the shallower the angle.
