Description
Narex carving chisel set Profi 8 pieces contains eight hand-finished carving chisels for woodcarving and linocut, and a wooden, wall-mountable storage rack. The blades are made of chrome vanadium steel (Cr-V) and hardened to 61–62 HRc hardness, which keeps the thin cutting edge sharp for a long time in soft and hard wood.
The eight profiles in the set cover the basic carving cuts: a flat chisel (profile 1), a double-bevel skew chisel (profile 1), four gouges with different sweeps (profiles 12, 11, 8 and 7), a V-chisel (profile 41) and a hollowing chisel (profile 1). The sweep numbers of the gouges follow the European profile marking for carving chisels, where a higher number means a deeper gouge.
The blades are ground and sharpened at the factory with honing paste and Arkansas stones, so they are ready to use without initial sharpening. The handles are waxed beech: the wax protects the wood from moisture and gives a secure grip without a lacquer finish. The shape of the handle suits both a palm grip and mallet use.
The wooden rack holds the chisels upright and apart, and it can be mounted on the wall next to the workstation. The set is suitable for relief carving, decorative cuts, lettering and linoleum carving; for larger woodcarving, use the Narex wood chisel set Profi 6-12-16-20-26-32 and for hollowing cups the Narex carving chisel set 6 pcs + sharpening stone.
Intended use and suitability:
Carving chisels are intended for cutting thin shavings from the surface of wood or linoleum by hand.
- Relief and decorative carving: gouges 7–12 shape round surfaces and bottoms, the V-chisel cuts sharp outlines and the flat chisel levels the background.
- Lettering and patterns: the skew chisel cuts the straight sides and corners of letters, the V-chisel thin lines.
- Linocut and woodcut: the V-chisel and gouges cut the grooves of the printing block in linoleum and plywood.
- Hollowing: the hollowing chisel (profile 1) and deep gouges for small cups, spoons and recesses.

Narex carving chisel set Profi instructions for use:
Use: Clamp the workpiece to the bench or in a holder. Guide the chisel with one hand close to the blade and push the handle with the other hand; always cut with the grain or at an angle to it, not against the grain. Take thin shavings: a deep cut tears the wood and can break the edge.
Sharpening: The flat and skew chisels are honed on a flat fine stone; gouges and the V-chisel on the outside by rolling the blade on a stone and on the inside with a slip stone or on leather with honing paste. Stropping on leather with paste alone is often enough to restore sharpness.
Maintenance: Wipe the blades dry and oil them lightly. Store them in the rack with the blades upwards, so that the edges do not touch each other.
Warnings:
- Very sharp blades: keep the guiding hand behind the blade and never cut towards your hand or body.
- Clamp the workpiece, as a hand-held piece slips.
- Do not use the chisel as a lever; the hard 61–62 HRc blade is brittle under sideways load.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
