Description
The Narex WOOD LINE PROFI gouge is the choice of demanding joiners and quality-conscious hobbyists when uncompromising performance and durability are needed for shaping wood. Handmade in the Czech Republic, this chisel represents the finest tradition of European tool making. At its core is high-quality Cr-Mn steel (chrome manganese), heat-treated to an optimal hardness of 59 HRC. This choice of material and treatment guarantees that the blade keeps its razor-sharp cutting edge for an exceptionally long time, even in intensive work on hardwoods, reducing the need for sharpening and improving work efficiency.
The product is ready to use to the highest standard: every chisel is ground and sharpened to perfection at the factory, so it is ready for even demanding work straight out of the box without time-consuming preparation. The quality and safety of the gouge are also shown by the fact that it meets the strict German DIN 5139 standard requirements, which ensures dimensional accuracy and material properties suitable for professional use.
Comfort and control play a central role in this PROFI range chisel. It has a carefully shaped, oval beech handle, stained and finished with wax. This looks stylish and, above all, gives an ergonomic, warm and secure grip, which reduces hand fatigue during long periods of work and improves control of the tool in precise cuts. The blade is fixed to the handle very securely with a traditional steel ferrule and ring, which eliminates the risk of the blade wobbling or coming loose even in heavy use, guaranteeing safe work.
Intended use:
This professional-grade gouge is designed for versatile wood shaping and material removal where a curved cut is needed. Its main applications are:
- Carving work: The chisel is ideal for making all kinds of decorative carvings, ornaments and reliefs on wooden surfaces. Its gouge shape lets you carve soft, curved shapes and recesses in a controlled way.
- Making grooves and channels: The tool is essential in joinery when U-shaped grooves are needed, for example for cables or mouldings, or as part of more complex wood joints. It removes material efficiently and neatly at the width and depth you want.
- Making holes and recesses: The gouge can work precise round-bottomed holes, for example for hinges, locks or other fittings for which a straight-bladed chisel is not suitable. It is also an effective tool for quickly removing material from larger recesses before finishing.

Narex wood chisel gouge instructions for use:
Use: The gouge is a cutting tool. It can be used either by pushing by hand for precise work or by striking with a wooden or rubber mallet when more force is needed to remove material. Never strike the chisel with a metal hammer, as this damages the end of the wooden handle. Always keep the workpiece firmly clamped. Always cut away from your body and hands. Control the depth and direction of the cut by changing the angle of the chisel.
Sharpening and maintenance: Although the blade is very durable, it goes blunt with use. Sharpen the chisel regularly with good-quality sharpening stones (e.g. water or oil stones). Because of the curved shape of the gouge, sharpening needs particular care. Use shaped stones or sharpening sticks made for gouges to remove burrs from the inside (the channel) and to sharpen the outside bevel. Using a honing guide is strongly recommended to keep the right bevel angle and guarantee an even result. Use honing oil or water (depending on the stone) for cooling and lubrication while sharpening. Clean the blade after use and apply a thin layer of machine oil to prevent rust during storage.
Warnings:
- Sharp tool: The blade of the chisel is very sharp. Handle with care to avoid cuts. Never test the sharpness with your finger.
- Cutting direction: Always work so that the blade moves away from yourself and other people. Keep your free hand out of the path of the blade.
- The right striking tool: Use only a wooden or rubber mallet to strike the chisel. Using a metal hammer destroys the wooden handle and can cause a risk of metal fragments flying.
- Safety glasses: Always wear safety glasses, especially when striking the chisel with a mallet, to protect your eyes from flying wood chips.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
What is the difference between a gouge and an ordinary chisel?
An ordinary chisel has a straight blade, while the blade of a gouge is U-shaped (curved) in cross-section. This lets you carve round-bottomed grooves, holes and curved shapes, which a straight chisel cannot do.
Does the chisel need sharpening before first use?
No. Narex WOOD LINE PROFI chisels come from the factory ground and sharpened to a razor edge, so they are ready to use straight away.
How do I sharpen the curved blade of a gouge?
Sharpening a gouge is more demanding than sharpening a straight chisel. The outside bevel is sharpened by rolling the chisel against the stone. The burr on the inside is removed with a round or shaped stone or stick that fits the shape of the channel. Using a honing guide is recommended to keep the right angle.
Can the handle be struck with a hammer?
Yes, but only with a wooden or rubber mallet. Using a metal hammer damages the wooden handle and the striking ring.
