Description
BeaverCraft carving knife set Dala horse is a carving kit that combines woodcarving and painting: with the set you carve a Dala horse from a pre-shaped lime blank and paint it with the colours supplied. The set comes with an illustrated instruction book in Finnish that guides the work step by step, so the set also suits carvers with no previous experience of woodcarving. The knife is the C14 model, with a blade length of 60 mm, a width of 15 mm and a thickness of 2 mm.
The overall length of the C14 is 160 mm and the handle length 100 mm. The blade is 1066 carbon steel and hardened to 57–59 HRC. The bevel is ground to 20 degrees and the grind is a Scandi grind, which gives a thin edge for soft wood; the manufacturer does not recommend the tool for hardwood.
The handle is ash and treated with linseed oil. The design is symmetrical, so the knife suits both right- and left-handed users. The knife is supplied factory-sharpened, and the steel has a 10-year warranty that does not cover wear, loss of sharpness, misuse or neglected maintenance.
The wood blank is lime and pre-shaped to the silhouette of a horse, so the work starts with finishing the shape rather than rough sawing. Finishing supplies include P150 sandpaper, paints and a brush and, for marking, a pencil; blade maintenance supplies include a leather strop and polishing paste. The manufacturer’s recommended age is 14 years, and adult supervision is recommended for younger users. Because of the painting, BeaverCraft carving knife set Dala horse is more work than BeaverCraft carving knife set bird, starter kit; a three-dimensional figure is carved with the set BeaverCraft carving knife set wizard, starter kit and a concave utensil with the set BeaverCraft carving knife set spoon, starter kit.
Intended use and suitability:
The set is intended for woodcarving by hand and painting the carving: making one horse figure following the instructions.
- A first carving project without previous experience: the pre-shaped blank and the illustrated instruction book in Finnish guide the carving and painting step by step.
- Carving and painting in the same project: the pre-shaped blank is carved to shape and decorated with the patterns typical of a Dala horse using the colours and brush supplied.
- Working flat surfaces: the straight 60 mm blade and Scandi grind of the C14 are suited to smoothing the surface and taking thin shavings before painting.
- A second carving project: the pre-shaped blank speeds up shaping, but the painted pattern requires precision and even sanding.
- Supervised carving: the manufacturer’s recommended age is 14 years; a younger user needs adult supervision and cut-protection tape on the fingers.
- Other carving projects: the C14 knife, leather strop and polishing paste stay in use once the set is finished.

BeaverCraft carving knife set Dala horse instructions for use:
1. Preparation: Set aside a sturdy table and good lighting. Wrap cut-protection tape around your thumb and index finger. Check that the blade is firmly in the handle.
2. Marking: Using the pencil, draw the mane, saddle and leg lines on the side of the blank following the model in the instruction book.
3. Finishing the shape: Remove the saw marks and round the neck, body and legs with short shavings away from yourself. Cut with the grain; cutting against the grain tears the surface.
4. Blade maintenance: Strop the blade on the leather strop with polishing paste every few minutes. A dull blade needs more force and slips more easily.
5. Sanding: Sand the surface smooth with P150 paper and remove the dust. Paint adheres unevenly if there are shaving marks or dust on the surface.
6. Base colour: Paint the body in one colour and let it dry completely before patterning.
7. Patterning: Paint the kurbits patterns on the dry base with a thin brush. Let each colour dry before the next.
8. Maintenance: Wash the brush with water immediately after use. Wipe the blade dry and oil it lightly; carbon steel rusts in damp conditions. Store the knife in a dry place with the blade protected.
Warnings:
- The knife is very sharp and factory-sharpened. Always cut away from yourself and keep your other hand out of the path of the blade.
- The set is not a toy. Keep out of the reach of children; a child may use the tools only under adult supervision.
- The manufacturer’s recommended age is 14 years; adult supervision is recommended for younger users depending on their experience and motor skills.
- Use cut-protection tape on your fingers; in the thumb push, the thumb presses on the back of the blade, not the edge.
- A dull blade slips more easily than a sharp one, so strop the edge regularly.
- Do not use the knife as a lever or chisel, or for cutting materials other than wood; the blade can break under sideways load.
- The paints and polishing paste are not edible; wash your hands after handling them and paint in a ventilated space.
- The painted figure is not for food use and is not a toy for small children.
