Description
The Narex carving chisel set is a set of five carving chisels for the basic stages of woodcarving. The set covers five different blade profiles: a skew knife, a shallow gouge, a deep gouge, a U-gouge and a V-parting tool, used for outlines, levelling the background, grooves and roundings without having to add individual chisels separately.
The blades are made of molybdenum-vanadium alloy steel (Mo-V) and hardened to 55 HRc. The alloy steel holds its edge in soft and medium-hard woods and withstands repeated sharpening, so the blades stay in working condition for a long time.
The handles are made of oiled beech. The shaped handle sits in a palm grip and transfers the pushing force straight to the blade; the oiled surface is unvarnished and gives a secure grip even with damp hands. The total weight of the set is about 920 grams.
The Narex carving chisel set is suitable for carving by hand: hollowing spoons, kuksa cups, ladles and bowls, as well as relief and decorative carving. For a wider range of profiles and a factory-sharpened set of blades, the Narex carving chisel set Profi 12 pcs in wooden box is suitable.
Intended use and suitability:
A carving chisel removes a thin shaving from the wood surface by hand; the shape of the blade profile determines the cut. The five profiles in the set cover the basic carving movements.
- Skew knife: cutting outlines and sharp corners, finishing details and severing fibres before removing material.
- Shallow gouge: levelling the background and shaping gentle surfaces in thin shavings.
- Deep gouge: removing material from recesses and hollowing spoons, kuksa cups and bowls.
- U-gouge: round-bottomed grooves and roundings where an even curved bottom is needed.
- V-parting tool: sharp lines, the corners of letters and the outlines of decorative patterns.
Package contents:

Features:
- Mo-V alloy steel 55 HRc: the tough blade holds its edge in woodcarving and withstands repeated sharpening.

- Oiled beech handle: the unvarnished surface gives a secure grip and withstands palm pressure.
- Shaped handle: directs the pushing force to the blade and helps you control the blade angle during the cut.
- Uniform set: all chisels have the same handle model and blade material, so sharpening and maintenance are the same.

Narex carving chisel set instructions for use:
Preparation: Secure the workpiece with a clamp or in a carving bench. Check the edge of the blade before starting work and strop it on leather if necessary.
Cutting: Hold the handle with your pushing hand and guide the blade with your other hand close to the edge. Cut with the grain or diagonally across it, in thin shavings. Start the outlines with the skew knife, remove the background with the shallow gouge and deepen the shapes with the deep gouge. Finish the grooves with the U and V profiles.
Sharpening: Hone the outer bevel of the gouges and the U profile on a fine stone, rolling the blade along its curve, and remove the burr on the inside with a slipstone. Both sides of the V-parting tool are honed separately and the tip without rounding it. Restore the edge often with light stropping on leather instead of honing.
Maintenance: Wipe the blades dry after use and oil them lightly. Store the chisels in a dry place so that the blades do not touch each other or other tools.
Warnings:
- The blades are extremely sharp. Always cut away from yourself and keep your guiding hand behind the blade.
- Secure the workpiece. A piece held in the hand can move and the blade can slip.
- Do not use the chisel as a lever or screwdriver. The thin curved blade breaks under a sideways load.
- Do not strike the handle with a metal hammer. If necessary, use a wooden or plastic mallet lightly and squarely.
- A blunt blade needs more force and increases the risk of slipping. Sharpen before the edge goes completely blunt.
- Store out of the reach of children with the blades protected.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
How many chisels does the Narex carving chisel set contain? The set has five carving chisels: skew knife, shallow gouge, deep gouge, U-gouge and V-parting tool.
What steel are the blades made of and how hard are they? The blades are made of molybdenum-vanadium alloy steel (Mo-V) with a hardness of 55 HRc.
Are five profiles enough for carving a spoon or kuksa cup? Yes. The deep gouge removes material from the hollow, the skew knife shapes the outer surface and outlines, and the U-gouge finishes the bottom.
How is a gouge sharpened? The outer bevel is honed on a fine stone, rolling the blade along its curve, and the burr on the inside is removed with a slipstone. Stropping on leather is usually enough to restore the edge.
Can the chisels be struck with a mallet? Light blows with a wooden or plastic mallet on the end of the handle are possible, but the set is primarily intended for pushing by hand.
What is the difference between the U-gouge and the deep gouge? The U-gouge has an evenly curved bottom and makes a groove of the same width through its whole depth, while the deep gouge removes material from a wider area for hollowing.
Recycling instructions:
Sort a Narex carving chisel set at the end of its service life by material: the blades go to metal recycling and the beech handles to wood waste or the energy fraction. Cardboard and paper packaging belongs in cardboard recycling and any plastic protector in plastic recycling. Protect the sharp edges before disposal.
