Description
Edma hot cutter 320W is a mains-powered handheld hot cutter that melts a cutting groove into expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS). It comes as standard with a 200 mm straight blade, and the power is 320 W. The cutter is supplied in a plastic carrying case.
The working principle is melting, not chip cutting. A steel blade heated by a resistor melts the polystyrene into a narrow groove, so the cut surface stays smooth and sealed and no loose polystyrene beads or cutting dust end up on the job site. The same blade cuts, shapes, grooves and notches insulation boards.
The body has active air cooling: a built-in fan guides an airflow through the cooling vents of the body, which keeps the temperature of the grip and switch area under control and the blade heat even. The cooling is intended for continuous cutting without cool-down breaks, which sets the tool apart from uncooled hot cutters. The cooling vents must not be covered during use.
The body is pistol-shaped with a trigger switch, so the cutter is guided along the board surface with one hand. The blade is replaceable and is fastened with the supplied mounting key, so the same body also takes straight blades of different lengths as well as groove and concealed groove blades. At the base of the power cord there is a hanging hook on which the hot tool can be rested between cuts.
Intended use and suitability:
Edma hot cutter 320W is designed for cutting and shaping polystyrene-based insulation boards on site. The range of blades extends its use from plain cutting to grooving and making penetrations.
- Additional insulation of external walls: fitting EPS and XPS boards to size in facade insulation; the melting cut does not break the board edge, so the joints sit tightly together.
- Plinth and frost insulation: cutting and bevelling thick XPS boards; the narrow melt groove removes little material and the cut edge withstands ground moisture without crumbling.
- Penetrations and recesses: recesses in the board for pipes, brackets and boxes; by fitting concealed groove and groove blades to the same body, you get a round or rectangular groove.
- Grooving and notching: recessed grooves for electrical conduits and support brackets in insulation board; the groove blade Edma spare blade for hot cutter, groove 30 mm makes a groove of even depth in one pass.
- Thick boards and packaging foams: pieces thicker than 200 mm need a longer blade, for example Spare blade for Edma hot knife cutter, 25 cm straight; the standard-length replacement blade is Edma spare blade for hot cutter, 20 cm straight.
- Dust-sensitive sites: indoor spaces and finished surfaces where the polystyrene beads produced by sawing would be a nuisance; the melting cut does not scatter beads around.

Edma hot cutter 320W instructions for use:
Fitting the blade: Make sure the plug is disconnected from the socket and the blade is cold. Push the blade shank fully into the blade holder and tighten it with the mounting key. Check that the blade cannot move in the holder.
Preparation: Support the insulation board so that the cut line is clear and the blade does not touch the base. Mark the cut line and use a guide strip or cutting guide for straight cuts. Make sure the power cord does not cross the cut line.
Heating: Plug in and press the trigger. Let the blade heat up for a few seconds before the first pass. Do not cover the cooling air vents of the body with your hand.
Cutting: Guide the blade into the board perpendicularly and let the hot blade advance under its own weight. Do not force the blade: forcing cools the blade and tears the edge of the melted groove. Keep the feed rate steady so that the groove stays the same width all the way.
Grooving and recesses: For groove work, change to a groove blade or concealed groove blade and adjust the cutting depth on a test piece. Make deep recesses in several passes instead of one deep pass.
Finishing work: Release the trigger and hang the tool on the hook so that the hot blade touches no surface. Let the blade cool before packing and unplug the tool from the socket.
Cleaning and maintenance: Brush off melt burnt onto the blade with the supplied wire brush while the blade is warm but the power is off and the plug is disconnected. Keep the cooling vents free of dust. Store the cutter in its case in a dry place and check the condition of the power cord before each use.
Warnings:
- Risk of burns: the blade and blade holder heat up to several hundred degrees. Do not touch the blade during use or before it has cooled down.
- Electric shock: check the power cord and plug before each use. A damaged tool or cord must not be connected to the mains, and repairs are a job for a qualified electrician.
- Unplug the tool before changing, cleaning or adjusting the blade and before storage.
- Use the tool in a socket protected by a residual current device (30 mA) and unwind the extension cord completely from the reel to prevent overheating.
- Keep the power cord away from the blade: the hot blade melts the cord insulation and causes a short circuit.
- The tool is not protected against splashing water. Do not use it in the rain, in wet conditions or in an explosive atmosphere.
- Fire risk: polystyrene is a combustible material. Do not cut near open flames or flammable liquids and gases, and keep a fire extinguisher at hand.
- Melting polystyrene releases fumes. Ensure adequate ventilation and wear a respirator in confined and unventilated spaces.
- Cut only polystyrene-based foams. Heating other plastics, such as PVC, can release gases that are harmful to health.
- Do not cover the cooling air vents of the body. A blocked airflow overheats the tool.
- Wear safety glasses and heat-resistant work gloves. Put the hot tool down only on its hook or on a non-combustible surface.
- Do not leave the tool unattended while it is plugged in. Store the cooled tool out of the reach of children.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
What materials does the Edma hot cutter 320W cut? Expanded polystyrene (EPS) and extruded polystyrene (XPS). Other plastics are not heated with this tool.
Why does the hot cutter have air cooling? The fan cools the body and evens out the blade temperature, so cutting can continue without breaks for the tool to cool down.
How thick an insulation board can the 200 mm blade cut? The cutting depth is set by the free length of the blade, so the 200 mm blade cuts boards thinner than this. For thicker pieces, change to the 25 cm blade.
Does cutting produce dust? No. The blade melts the groove, so no loose polystyrene beads or cutting dust are produced as with sawing.
Can the blade be changed to another model? Yes. The blade is removed with the mounting key, and the body takes straight blades of different lengths as well as groove and concealed groove blades.
How is the blade cleaned? Melted polystyrene is brushed off the blade with the supplied wire brush, with the power off and the plug disconnected.
How quickly does the blade heat up? The blade reaches cutting temperature within a few seconds of switching on, so work can start almost immediately.
Why does the cutting groove widen or the edge tear? The most common reason is advancing too fast or forcing the blade, which cools it. Slow down the pass and let the blade melt the material.
Recycling instructions:
A discarded Edma hot cutter 320W is waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). Take the tool and its detached power cord to a WEEE collection point or a municipal reception point, not to mixed waste.
Detached steel parts, such as worn cutting blades and the wire brush, go to metal collection. Protect the blade before disposal, for example with cardboard. The plastic carrying case belongs in plastic collection and the packaging cardboard in cardboard collection.
