Description

The Narex joiner’s mallet is a traditional-design tool made entirely of wood, designed especially for the needs of fine joinery and the joinery industry. The beech used for the mallet is a dense, tough hardwood, which makes it an ideal material for striking tools. Beech withstands repeated stress well without splitting easily, offering a long service life in a professional environment.

The primary advantage of this type of wooden mallet over metal hammers is its gentleness. When wood chisels, especially wooden-handled ones, are struck with a metal hammer, the end of the chisel is damaged and “mushrooms” quickly, which can lead to the handle splitting and a shorter tool life. The wooden striking face absorbs the blow just enough and transfers the force to the chisel efficiently but softly, protecting the structure of the chisel. This makes the Narex mallet essential equipment for anyone who works with valuable hand tools.

The design of the mallet is functional and ergonomic. Its weight of 332 grams is optimised to give enough striking force for the most common chisel uses, such as making mortise and tenon joints, without the tool feeling heavy or clumsy even during long work. The handle is shaped to sit naturally in the hand, which improves grip and striking accuracy. The head dimensions of the mallet (50 mm x 120 mm) offer a generous striking face that makes it easier to hit the end of the chisel from different working angles.

Intended use:

The Narex joiner’s mallet is designed for professional woodworking that requires precision and respect for tools. Its main uses are:

  • Striking wood chisels and gouges: This is the primary use of the mallet. It is excellent for making mortises, notches and recesses with chisels. A wooden striking face is an absolute must when using traditional wooden-handled chisels, but it is also advisable with plastic-handled chisels to reduce jarring and noise.
  • Assembling and dismantling wood joints: The mallet is used in assembling furniture and other wooden structures to knock joints, such as mortise and tenon and dovetail joints, together. The wooden head does not easily leave marks on the surface of the workpiece, unlike a metal hammer. It can also be used carefully to open joints in repair work.
  • Fine adjustment and fitting: Joinery often requires small wooden parts, such as wedges, dowels or trims, to be tapped precisely into place. The Narex mallet offers the sensitivity and control needed for this, so force can be dosed just right without the risk of damaging a delicate workpiece.

Package contents:

  • 1 pcs Narex joiner’s mallet, beech (60 x 120 mm model).

Features:

  • All-wood construction (beech): Made of durable, tough beech. The material absorbs impacts and withstands hard use without splitting, which is essential for a striking tool.
  • Gentle on tools: The wooden striking face is considerably softer than metal. This feature protects the ends of chisels and other struck tools from damage and extends their life significantly.
  • Ergonomic handle: The handle is shaped to fit the hand, which guarantees a firm grip and reduces hand fatigue during long work. The shape also helps direct the blow.
  • Optimised weight (332g): The weight of the mallet is balanced to give enough mass for efficient transfer of force to the chisel, while keeping good control and precision in more delicate work.

Technical specifications:

  • Material: Beech (beech wood).
  • Weight: 332 g.
  • Head dimensions: 50 mm x 120 mm.
  • Overall length: 300 mm.
  • Type: Traditional joiner’s mallet/hammer.

Narex joiner’s mallet instructions for use:

To make sure the mallet serves you safely for a long time, follow these instructions for use and care. Take a firm grip of the handle close to the head for precise work, or further away when you need more force. Always aim to hit the object being struck (e.g. the end of a chisel) with the centre of the mallet head and at a right angle. This ensures the most efficient transfer of force and prevents damage to the edges of the head.

As the tool is made of a natural material, looking after it is important. Check the condition of the mallet regularly. If splinters or sharp edges appear on the striking faces, they can be sanded lightly smooth with sandpaper. To prevent the wood drying out and cracking, the mallet can be treated lightly from time to time with linseed oil or another wood protection oil, for example. Store the mallet in a dry place, protected from extreme changes in temperature and humidity.

Warnings:

  • Never strike metal objects such as nails, screws or metal workpieces with the wooden mallet. This permanently damages the wooden striking face and can cause wood splinters to come off.
  • Always wear safety glasses when working with striking tools to protect yourself from any loose chips or dust.
  • Before use, make sure the head of the mallet is firmly attached to the handle and has no significant cracks that could cause the tool to break during use.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ):

Why use a wooden mallet instead of a metal hammer?
A wooden mallet is gentler on struck tools, especially wooden-handled chisels. It does not “mushroom” or break the end of the chisel in the same way as a hard metal hammer, which extends the life of the chisels.

Is a weight of 332g enough?
Yes, this weight is excellent for general use in fine joinery. It offers a good balance between striking force and control in most chisel situations.

Can this mallet be used for assembling furniture?
Yes. The wooden head is gentler on wooden surfaces than metal, so it is well suited, for example, to carefully tapping mortise and tenon joints together. If needed, however, use a block to protect the most delicate surfaces.
