Description
The Schwan tile sponge (model “Combi”) is a dual-purpose cleaning tool designed for professional use that makes the washing stage of tiling more efficient. The sponge consists of two different layers of material laminated together for versatile cleaning power. The first side is coarse-pored and stiffer, intended for removing stubborn cement, adhesive and grout residue from the tile surface without scratching the glaze itself. The second side is a fine-pored “Glaspore” material with excellent water absorption. This side is used for the final washing of the surface and finishing the joints.
The design of the product differs from traditional rectangular sponges thanks to its bevelled wedge shape. The edges of the sponge are cut at an angle, which makes it much easier to clean inside corners, floor edges and other tight spots without damaging the fresh joint. The size of the sponge (200 x 95 x 65 mm) is optimised to fit the hand, giving a large working surface while remaining controllable even when wet.
This German-made (“Made in Germany”) product is made of durable polymers that tolerate alkaline cleaning agents and cement-based products. The sponge returns to its shape after squeezing and withstands heavy use on site.
Intended use:
The Schwan tile sponge is designed primarily for the different stages of tiling work:
- Initial cleaning: Using the coarse side to remove dried grout splashes, paint and tile adhesive from the tile surface.
- Joint washing: Using the fine side for washing after grouting (emulsifying and removing water).
- Finishing corners: Using the bevelled edge to prepare silicone joints or shape corner joints.
- General cleaning: Also suitable for washing other hard surfaces on a construction site.
Package contents:
The product is supplied loose
- 1 pcs Schwan tile sponge (Kombi/bevelled)
Features:
Technical and functional features of the product:
- Double-sided construction: Combines coarse cleaning power and fine finishing in one tool.
- Wedge design: The bevelled edges improve reach in corners and reduce the risk of hitting the joint at the wrong angle.
- High absorbency: The fine-pored side binds water and grout slurry efficiently.
- Chemical resistance: The material withstands construction chemicals without becoming brittle.

Schwan tile sponge instructions for use:
Getting started: Wet the sponge with plenty of water and squeeze it until soft before first use.
Cleaning stage: Use the coarser, open-cell side of the sponge to remove grout or adhesive residue that has dried on the tile surface. Wet the surface and scrub with circular movements.
Washing stage: Turn the sponge over and use the finer side to wash the grouting. Draw the sponge diagonally across the joints so that the sponge does not dig the grout out of the joint. Rinse the sponge often in clean water so that no film of dirt is left on the tile.
Care: Wash the sponge carefully after use to remove all cement. Cement hardening inside the sponge ruins its absorbency and makes it hard.
Warnings:
Note the following points to protect surfaces:
- Risk of scratching: Although the sponge is designed for tiles, test the coarse side first on an inconspicuous spot if the glaze is very delicate or the surface is natural stone.
- Damage to joints: Do not press too hard when washing fresh grout, so that the joint does not get too deep.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Why is the sponge cut at an angle?
The angled “wedge shape” helps the edges of the sponge reach better into 90-degree inside corners and along the floor edge, where a square sponge does not reach as accurately.
Can this be used for epoxy grout?
The sponge is suitable for washing epoxy grouting, but the coarse side can clog faster with epoxy. A separate scouring pad and cellulose sponge are often recommended for epoxy, but this works as a general-purpose cleaner.
Recycling instructions:
Dispose of the product as follows:
- Sponge: Energy waste, or mixed waste if it has hardened with grout.
