Description
The Schwan paint mixer 60 x 400 mm is a drill-mounted mixer for light paints, varnishes, stains and thin-flowing mixtures. The mixing head is 60 mm in diameter and the overall length of the tool is 400 mm, so the head reaches the bottom of an ordinary 10 litre paint container without the drill chuck going inside the container.
It is attached by a 5 mm angular shank that fits directly into the three-jaw chuck of an ordinary drill. The angular 5 mm shank limits use to low-power, low-torque drills: the thin shank slips in the chuck or bends if heavy compounds such as mortar or filler are mixed.
The mixing head is a ring type: a bent steel ring and a paddle fixed inside it move the paint vertically and horizontally at the same time. The ring design mixes the contents of the container without a strong vortex, so less air gets mixed into the paint than with a paddle mixer. Air bubbles show up as craters in the finished paint surface.
The body and head are steel coated with blue paint, and the end of the shank has a black plastic protective cap. The paint coating slows down rusting in storage, but it is not a solvent-resistant coating: solvent-based paints and cleaning agents can soften or lift the coating over time.
Intended use and suitability:
The mixer homogenises the paint and its binder and mixes pigment, tint or thinner evenly. The ring head is suited to thin-flowing and medium-viscosity liquids, not stiff compounds.
- Interior and exterior paints: mixing dispersion, acrylic and alkyd paints in the container before application and keeping them mixed during work.
- Tinted paints: mixing the pigment of machine-tinted paint evenly before first use and to avoid colour differences when using several containers.
- Varnishes, stains and primers: bringing settled binder and matting agent back into the mix.
- Thinning: mixing thinner evenly into paint for spraying or rolling.
- Light liquid mixtures: cleaning solutions, primers and other thin-flowing mixtures that contain no sand or cement.
Package contents:
- 1 pcs paint mixer, mixing head 60 mm, overall length 400 mm, 5 mm angular shank
Features:
- Mixing head 60 mm: fits into narrow paint containers and tins.
- Overall length 400 mm: reaches the bottom of a 10 litre container without the chuck going inside the container.

- Ring-type head: mixes the liquid without mixing in unnecessary air.
- Painted steel construction: the blue coating slows down rusting in storage.
- Plastic cap on the shank end: protects the end of the shank and the packaging during transport.
- For light compounds: designed for paints and liquids, not for mortars or fillers.

Schwan paint mixer 60 x 400 mm instructions for use:
Fitting: Push the 5 mm shank into the drill chuck to its full clamping length and tighten the chuck. Check that the mixer runs true without wobbling; a bent shank wobbles and splashes paint.
Mixing: Lower the head to the bottom of the container before starting and start the drill at a low speed. Raise and lower the mixer slowly so that pigment and binder that have settled at the bottom are mixed in. Keep the head below the surface of the liquid at all times, because a head spinning above the surface splashes and mixes air into the paint. Switch off the drill before lifting the head out.
Speed: Use a low speed and short mixing periods. A high speed makes the paint foam and causes craters in the dry paint surface.
Cleaning: Wash the mixer immediately after use: water-based paints with water, solvent-based paints with the thinner stated by the manufacturer. Dried paint between the ring and the paddle unbalances the rotation. Dry before storage.
Warnings:
- The rotating mixing head catches hair, scarves and sleeves, so tie back long hair and keep clothing fastened.
- Do not mix mortar, filler or other heavy compounds: the 5 mm shank bends or slips in the chuck and the drill can be wrenched from your grip.
- Start and stop the drill only with the head inside the liquid; otherwise the paint splashes.
- Wear safety glasses and protective gloves; the safety data sheets of the paints being mixed apply.
- When mixing solvent-based paints, make sure the room is ventilated and remove sources of ignition.
- Check the shank before use; a bent shank wobbles and can come loose from the chuck.
- Keep out of the reach of children.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Is the paint mixer suitable for mixing mortar or filler? No. The 5 mm angular shank and light ring head are designed for paints and liquids; heavy compounds need a mixer with a hex or M14 shank and a mixing machine.
What kind of drill does the mixer fit? A drill with a three-jaw chuck that takes a 5 mm angular shank and has adjustable speed.
How large a container is the 400 mm length enough for? The length reaches the bottom of an ordinary 10 litre paint container with the chuck staying outside the container.
Why are there bubbles in the paint after mixing? Too high a speed or lifting the head above the surface mixes air into the paint. Mix slowly and keep the head below the surface.
Does the blue coating withstand solvent-based paints? The coating is rust protection, not a solvent-resistant coating. Solvents and repeated solvent washing can soften the paint surface over time.
Recycling instructions:
Take a paint mixer that is no longer in use to metal collection; remove the plastic protective cap and sort it into plastic collection. Wash the mixer before taking it for recycling. Do not pour paint waste or washing water down the drain; take them to a hazardous waste collection point. Sort cardboard and plastic packaging into their own collections.
