Description
The Schwan chalk line 30 m is a hand-operated chalk line reel for snapping a straight marking line onto a surface. The reel holds 30 metres of marking line, which picks up colour from the chalk powder added to the case and leaves a sharp line on the surface when the taut line is snapped.
The case body is plastic and the winding crank is metal. The metal crank withstands repeated winding and keeps its shape even when the full 30 metre line is wound back in one go. The plastic body keeps the tool light and protects the chalk inside the reel from moisture.
The end of the line has a metal end hook that catches on the edge of a board, a nail or a screw. With the hook, one person can snap a line without a helper. The side of the case has a filling opening with a screw cap, through which chalk powder is added without taking the reel apart.
The 30 metre line is long enough for long wall lines, floor areas and roof surfaces where a straightedge cannot be used. For shorter lines, the range includes the Schwan chalk line reel 15 m, metal body. The line is a wearing part and can be replaced; chalk powder is purchased separately.
Intended use and suitability:
A chalk line is used to mark straight lines on surfaces where a straightedge cannot be placed or where the distance is too long for a straightedge.
- Roofing work: lines for roofing underlay, roof battens and roofing felt strips on long roof slopes.
- Floor and board work: cutting lines on boards, positions of battens and mouldings.
- Masonry: aligning courses and joints along the full length of the wall.
- Tiling: starting lines and cross lines on floors and walls.
- Landscaping: marking lines for paving and foundations over long distances.
Works on dry and relatively smooth surfaces such as concrete, wood-based board, brick and roofing underlay. A wet or dusty surface does not take the colour properly.
Package contents:
- Chalk line reel, plastic body and metal winding crank

Schwan chalk line 30 m instructions for use:
Filling: Open the screw cap of the filling opening, fill the case about halfway with chalk powder and close the cap. Shake the case so that the chalk coats the line evenly along its full length.
Marking: Fix the end hook at the starting point of the line on a nail, a screw or the edge of a board. Pull the line out of the case to the end point of the line and hold the line taut against the surface. Lift the line from the middle straight up about 10–20 cm from the surface and release it squarely, so that the line snaps onto the surface and leaves a mark.
Long lines: On lines over ten metres the line sags in the middle. Tension the line well and snap a long line in two parts: press the line against the surface in the middle and snap first one half, then the other.
Winding: Hold the line lightly and wind the crank evenly so that the line lies on the reel without overlapping.
Maintenance: Brush chalk dust off the outside of the case after work. When the line stays faint even though there is chalk, replace the line. Store in a dry place; damp chalk forms lumps and does not stick to the line.
Warnings:
- A taut line can snap back if it breaks, so keep your face out of the line of the string and wear safety glasses.
- Chalk powder is dusty: avoid breathing in the dust and getting it in your eyes, and wear a respirator in confined spaces.
- The marking line is permanent on many porous surfaces, so test it on an inconspicuous spot before marking visible surfaces.
- Do not use the line for lifting, pulling or fastening.
- Keep the chalk and the tool out of the reach of children.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Is chalk powder included with the Schwan chalk line 30 m? No. The chalk is purchased separately and added through the filling opening in the case.
How long is the line in the case? The reel holds 30 metres of line, so a continuous mark can be made over a distance of about 30 metres.
How do I get a long line straight? Tension the line well and snap the line in two parts: press the line onto the surface in the middle and snap each half separately. This way a line that sags in the middle does not curve the mark.
Can the line be replaced? Yes. The line is a wearing part: the worn line is wound off and a new marking line of the same thickness is fitted in its place.
Does the tool work outdoors? Yes, in dry weather. Moisture and wind make it harder for the chalk to stick to the line and for the mark to stay on the surface.
Recycling instructions:
Take a chalk line that is no longer in use apart: the plastic body goes to plastic collection or energy recovery waste, the metal crank and end hook to metal collection, and the textile line to mixed waste. Dispose of chalk powder residues as instructed on its packaging; do not rinse the powder down the drain. Recycle the product packaging with cardboard recycling in line with local instructions.
