Description
Narex’s three-piece carving knife set offers an optimised set of tools for making wooden spoons and other hollowed objects. The set contains three different blade profiles that cover the different stages of work from blank to finishing. The blades of the tools are made of carbon steel and heat-treated to 61 HRC hardness, which ensures that the edge keeps its bite during long woodworking sessions. Carbon steel as a material is known for its ability to take a very sharp cutting edge.
The handles of the knives are made of beech. The handles are ergonomically shaped and have flat sides that help the user sense the direction of the blade and give a firm grip in different carving positions. This reduces hand strain in work that requires precision. The set is designed to meet the needs of demanding woodcarving, offering control and performance for removing and shaping material. The pack also includes a pre-cut lime blank to start work.
Intended use:
This tool set is aimed especially at carving three-dimensional shapes from wood.
- Carving spoons: The main use of the set, for which the included tools (whittling, hollowing and gouge blades) have been specially chosen.
- Kuksa cups and bowls: Suitable for hollowing and shaping the outside of small wooden vessels and kuksa cups.
- General woodcarving: The tools can be used in many ways in various woodcarving projects that require precision.
Package contents:
- 1 pcs straight carving knife (whittling knife, model 822510).
- 1 pcs double-edged curved carving knife (spoon knife/hook knife, model 822103).
- 1 pcs deep-curved carving knife (hollowing gouge, model 822820).
- 1 pcs pre-cut lime wood blank.
Features:
The technical solutions of the set support efficient, precise woodworking.
- Blade material carbon steel: Allows a very sharp cutting edge and is easy to sharpen.
- Hardness 61 HRC: The high hardness guarantees that the edge stays sharp for a long time even when working harder woods.
- Ergonomic beech handles: The handle shape with flat sides improves control of the tool and stops it rotating in the hand.
- Optimised blade selection: Three different blades cover the stages of spoon making: shaping, hollowing and finishing.

Instructions for use and maintenance:
Use: Always use the knives with controlled movements and pay attention to the direction of the blade. The whittling knife is suitable for shaping outer surfaces, while the curved knives are intended for removing material from hollowed areas such as the bowl of a spoon.
Maintenance: Carbon steel blades are prone to corrosion. Clean and dry the blades carefully after use. Apply a thin layer of machine oil or camellia oil to the blades regularly to prevent rust, especially for storage. Sharpen the blades regularly to keep their cutting performance; a blunt blade needs more force and reduces safety.
Warnings:
- Sharpness: The tools are supplied extremely sharp. Handle with care to avoid cuts.
- Working direction: Never carve towards yourself. Keep your free hand out of the path of the blade.
- Misuse: Do not use the knives for prying or for working materials other than wood, as the blade can break.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Why are the blades carbon steel rather than stainless steel?
Carbon steel can be hardened harder (61 HRC) than most stainless steels, which means better edge retention in woodcarving. It is also easier to sharpen razor-sharp. The downside is that it needs oiling to prevent rust.
Is this set suitable for left-handed users?
The straight whittling knife and the hollowing gouge are ambidextrous. The hook knife (spoon knife) in the set is double-edged, so it can be used with either the right or left hand for pulling and pushing cuts.
Recycling instructions:
The tools are long-lasting. At the end of their life, the metal blades can be recycled in metal collection and the wooden handles as energy waste or wood waste. Recycle the packaging materials according to local instructions (cardboard/plastic).
