Description

The BeaverCraft carving knife set kuksa offers a comprehensive solution for making your own traditional wooden cup, or kuksa. This carefully assembled pack is designed to take the user through the process from start to finish, offering all the special tools and materials you need in one pack. A key part is a quality walnut blank, which is pre-shaped and has a pre-drilled hollow, which makes it easier to start hollowing and saves a lot of time in the initial shaping.

The set includes two specialised knives optimised for working a kuksa. It includes the C16 Roughing Knife for general carving and shaping the outside and the SK2 Spoon Carving Knife (spoon knife) for precise hollowing of the deep part of the cup. The knives are supplied sharpened and ready to use. Walnut as the choice of material gives the finished product a beautiful, dark shade and durability. Walnut is a rewarding material to work, allowing precise cuts and a smooth finish.

In addition to carving, the pack covers the finishing stages comprehensively. It includes sandpapers of different grits for smoothing the surface, a leather strop and polishing compound for keeping the blades razor-sharp during work, and a natural beeswax-based finish. This finish protects the finished kuksa from moisture and brings out the natural beauty of the wood grain, making the cup food-safe and ready to use. Detailed, illustrated instructions guide you through safe techniques and work steps.

BeaverCraft carving knife set kuksa instructions for use:

Start by reading the illustrated instructions and safety instructions supplied. Make sure the work area is clean and well lit. Keep the plaster supplied to hand. While carving, it is advisable to wear a cut-resistant glove (not included) on your free hand.

The carving process usually goes as follows:
1. Hollowing the cup: Use the SK2 spoon knife to make the pre-drilled hollow deeper and wider. Work from the edges towards the centre, following the wood grain.
2. Carving the outer shape: Use the C16 general-purpose knife to shape the outer surface and handle of the kuksa as you want. Take thin shavings at a time to keep control.
3. Sharpening during work: Keep the blades sharp regularly by using the leather strop and polishing compound. A sharp knife is safer and the result neater.
4. Sanding: When you are happy with the carving, sand the surface smooth, starting with the coarsest sandpaper and moving to finer grits. Always sand along the grain of the wood.
5. Finishing: Clean off the sanding dust carefully. Apply the beeswax mixture over the whole surface of the kuksa with a clean cloth or your fingers. Let it soak in and polish if necessary.

Maintenance: Wash the finished kuksa by hand after use with lukewarm water without strong detergents. Do not put it in a dishwasher or microwave. Renew the wax treatment regularly when the surface looks dry.

Warnings:

  • Sharp tools: The knives in the pack are very sharp and can cause serious cuts if handled incorrectly. Always use appropriate protective equipment (such as a cut-resistant glove) and always carve away from yourself.
  • Choking hazard: The pack contains small parts (such as sharpening compound, wax tin, pieces of sandpaper) that can cause a choking hazard for small children. Keep out of the reach of children.
  • Wood particles: Fine wood dust produced during sanding can irritate the airways and eyes. If necessary, wear a respirator and safety glasses when sanding.
  • Condition of tools: Do not use damaged tools. Make sure the blades are firmly fixed in the handles before use.
