Step by step: sharpening the BeaverCraft chip carving knife
Step 1: Preparation
- Clean the blade: Make sure the blade is clean and dry before sharpening.
- Prepare the sharpening tools: Wet the whetstone with water, or with honing oil to avoid rusting the blade, and place the sandpaper on a flat surface.
Step 2: Setting the blade angle
- The right angle: Sharpening a chip carving knife requires keeping a precise angle throughout sharpening.
- Positioning: Place the knife against the whetstone so that the sharpening angle stays the same throughout the process.
Step 3: Sharpening
- Movement: Draw the knife edge against the whetstone in even, controlled strokes.
- Precision: Make sure all parts of the edge are sharpened evenly.
Step 4: Fine sharpening
- Finer stone: Switch to a finer whetstone or sandpaper.
- Finishing: Repeat the sharpening process with the finer stone, concentrating on a smooth, sharp finish on the edge.
Step 5: Cleaning and checking the blade
- Cleaning: Wipe the blade carefully, making sure all grinding dust is removed.
- Checking: Test the sharpness of the blade carefully and safely.
