Description
The Irwin Masonry drill bit is developed for fast, efficient drilling in masonry, brick, aerated concrete and lightweight expanded clay blocks. The body of the drill bit is made of high-quality chrome vanadium steel (CrV) with a high carbon content, which allows effective hardening and improves the fracture strength of the bit under mechanical stress. This makes the bit very durable in hammer drilling.
The tip of the bit has a unique pressed, diamond-ground carbide tip, which guarantees aggressive cutting performance and a long service life. Diamond grinding ensures a sharp starting geometry, which stops the bit from wandering at the start of drilling and ensures a round hole diameter. The geometry of the carbide tip is designed to withstand the continuous axial impact stress produced by hammer drills.
The single-flute spiral design (single flute) guarantees fast removal of drilling dust from the hole. Fast dust removal reduces friction and heat build-up during drilling, which prevents the carbide tip from overheating and extends the service life of the drill bit by up to 20 per cent compared with earlier Irwin masonry bit models. The optimised spiral also saves the power consumption of a cordless machine when working without mains power.
The bit has a straight shank, which is compatible with standard three-jaw chucks and keyless chucks. The bit is suitable for use in both mains-powered and cordless hammer drills in rotary or hammer drilling mode. The 5 mm nominal diameter drill bit is sized precisely for installation holes for standard wall plugs and light anchor fixings.
Intended use and suitability:
The drill bit is designed for drilling holes in various mineral and porous building materials without risk of cracking.
- Brick and masonry work: Used for making installation holes for fixings in fired clay brick, sand-lime brick and other masonry structures.
- Aerated concrete and lightweight expanded clay: Suitable for drilling softer, porous aggregates such as Siporex and Leca blocks, where a clean hole of accurate diameter is needed.
- Cordless hammer drills: Thanks to the low-friction spiral geometry, the bit is optimised to spare the motor and battery capacity of cordless machines in series drilling.
Package contents:

Irwin Masonry drill bit instructions for use:
1. Fit the straight shank of the drill bit carefully in the drill chuck and tighten all three jaws evenly with the chuck key or using the keyless chuck.
2. Mark the drilling point with a centre punch or pencil. Set the drill selector to hammer drilling for brick and concrete, or to rotation only for very brittle materials such as aerated concrete.
3. Place the tip of the bit at right angles to the surface. Start drilling at low speed without pressing hard until the bit has made an initial recess.
4. Increase the speed and press the machine evenly along its axis. While drilling, pull the bit slightly out of the hole from time to time so that compacted fine drilling dust can escape efficiently along the spiral.
5. Let the drill and the bit do the work; do not press the bit sideways, as this can bend or break it.
Warnings:
- Wear safety glasses: Stone and metal chips coming off during drilling can cause eye injuries.
- Do not cool with water during drilling: Sudden cooling of the carbide tip with water during hot work can cause thermal shock and split the alloy.
- Wear a respirator: Breathing in stone dust and quartz dust is harmful to health. Always wear a suitable P2 or P3 class respirator or use on-tool extraction.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Question: Can this drill bit be used in an ordinary screwdriver without hammer action?
Answer: Yes, it can. With hard materials such as brick, however, the lack of hammer action slows drilling down significantly and wears the cutting edge of the bit faster because of friction. In porous materials such as aerated concrete (Siporex), rotation alone is sufficient and recommended.
Question: Is this drill bit suitable for a rotary hammer with an SDS-Plus fitting?
Answer: Not directly. This bit has a round straight shank, which needs a traditional three-jaw chuck. The bit can be used in an SDS-Plus chuck only through a separate SDS-Plus straight shank adapter, in rotation mode without hammer action.
Recycling instructions:
Sort a worn or damaged metal drill bit into metal collection. Recycle plastic retail packaging through hard plastic packaging collection according to local instructions.
