From two blacksmiths' vision to a global giant

Irwin's story began in 1885, when Charles Irwin patented a revolutionary auger drill bit. The real turning point, however, came in 1924, when Danish blacksmith William Petersen invented the first locking pliers and named them Vise-Grip. This invention permanently changed the way metal and other materials are worked.

Over the decades, Irwin has joined forces with other legendary manufacturers, such as the clamp maker Quick-Grip, the chisel specialist Marples and Jack, known for its saws. Today Irwin is part of the Stanley Black & Decker group, but its core idea has stayed the same: to offer "Trade Strong" tools that withstand a professional's squeezing, twisting and impacts day after day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the Vise-Grip Original and Fast Release models?

The Original model has a traditional release trigger that takes a little more force. Fast Release (Fast Release™) models have a rubberised handle and a mechanism that lets you open the pliers easily with one hand without "kickback".

Can Quick-Grip clamps be used as spreaders?

Yes. Most clamps in the Quick-Grip XP and Medium Duty series can be converted into spreaders in a few seconds by removing one jaw and turning it round.

Do Blue Groove bits fit cordless drills?

Yes. Irwin's Blue Groove 6X and 4X flat wood bits usually have a 1/4" quick-change hex shank, so they are an excellent fit for impact drivers and cordless drills.

What does Marples mean in Irwin products?

Marples is a historic English chisel maker that Irwin acquired. The name lives on in Irwin's high-quality wood chisels ("Irwin Marples"), which are known for excellent edge retention.
