Description
BeaverCraft carving knife set bird is a beginner’s carving kit that contains the tools, wood blanks, finishing supplies and an illustrated instruction book in Finnish for carving one bird figure. Thanks to the step-by-step instruction book, the set also suits carvers with no previous experience of woodcarving. The knife in the set is the C1M model, with a blade length of 60 mm and a width of 14 mm; the handle length is 105 mm.
The blade is 1066 carbon steel and hardened to 57–59 HRC. The bevel is ground to 20 degrees, which gives a thin, sharp edge for soft wood. The manufacturer does not recommend the tool for hardwood, as the fine edge dulls faster in it.
The handle is ash and treated with linseed oil. The design is symmetrical, so the knife suits both right- and left-handed users. The knife is supplied factory-sharpened and ready to use, and the steel has a 10-year warranty that does not cover wear, loss of sharpness, misuse or neglected maintenance.
The pack contains two wood blanks: a lime blank and a cherry blank. Lime is soft and even-grained and cuts easily; cherry is denser and holds details more precisely. Finishing supplies include sandpaper and beeswax, and for blade maintenance a leather strop and polishing paste. The manufacturer’s recommended age is 14 years, and adult supervision is recommended for younger users. BeaverCraft carving knife set bird is the easiest project in the range; the horse figure to be painted is BeaverCraft carving knife set Dala horse, starter kit, the three-dimensional figure BeaverCraft carving knife set wizard, starter kit and the spoon project, which needs two knives, BeaverCraft carving knife set spoon, starter kit.
Intended use and suitability:
The set is intended for woodcarving by hand: carving one bird figure following the instructions and learning carving techniques.
- A first carving project without previous experience: the ready blanks, the pattern and the illustrated instruction book in Finnish guide the work step by step and remove the need to source materials; one knife and table space are enough for the work.
- Practising basic techniques: the pull grip, thumb push and removing shavings are learned through one rounded figure.
- Two wood species: the lime blank is used to practise shaping, and the cherry blank shows how denser wood needs shorter shavings and more frequent stropping.
- Supervised carving: the manufacturer’s recommended age is 14 years; a younger user needs adult supervision and cut-protection tape on the fingers.
- Other carving projects: the C1M knife, leather strop and polishing paste stay in use for other carving projects once the set is finished.

BeaverCraft carving knife set bird instructions for use:
1. Preparation: Set aside a sturdy table and good lighting. Wrap cut-protection tape around your thumb and index finger. Check that the blade is firmly in the handle.
2. Transferring the pattern: Place the pattern template on the side of the blank and draw the outline. Also mark the centre line so that the shape stays symmetrical.
3. Rough shaping: Remove excess wood with short, controlled shavings away from yourself. Cut with the grain or at an angle; cutting against the grain tears the surface.
4. Rounding the shape: Round the breast, back and tail with a pull grip, and check the shape against the pattern template from both sides.
5. Blade maintenance: Strop the blade on the leather strop with polishing paste every few minutes. A dull blade needs more force and slips more easily.
6. Sanding: Sand the surface with the coarsest paper and work through to the finest. Remove the dust before finishing.
7. Finishing: Rub beeswax into the surface and polish with a cloth. Repeat the treatment when the surface turns dull.
8. Maintenance: Wipe the blade dry after use and oil it lightly; carbon steel rusts in damp conditions. Store the knife in a dry place with the blade protected.
Warnings:
- The knife is very sharp and factory-sharpened. Always cut away from yourself and keep your other hand out of the path of the blade.
- The set is not a toy. Keep out of the reach of children; a child may use the tools only under adult supervision.
- The manufacturer’s recommended age is 14 years; adult supervision is recommended for younger users depending on their experience and motor skills.
- Use cut-protection tape on your fingers; in the thumb push, the thumb presses on the back of the blade, not the edge.
- A dull blade slips more easily than a sharp one, so strop the edge regularly.
- Do not use the knife as a lever or chisel, or for cutting materials other than wood; the blade can break under sideways load.
- The polishing paste and wax are not edible; wash your hands after handling them.
- Wood dust can irritate the respiratory tract; sand in a well-ventilated space.

Recycling instructions:
Sort the cardboard packaging and instruction book into cardboard and paper. Wood shavings and blank offcuts go into wood waste or energy waste.
