Description
BeaverCraft carving knife set spoon is a carving kit for making a wooden spoon: it includes two knives, a pre-sawn lime blank, sharpening supplies, sandpaper and an illustrated instruction book in Finnish. Thanks to the step-by-step instruction book, the set also suits carvers with no previous experience of woodcarving. Two tools are needed because the outside of the spoon is carved with a straight blade and the bowl is hollowed with a hook knife.
The straight knife is the C13 model, with a blade length of 60 mm and a thickness of 2 mm; the overall length is 165 mm and the handle length 105 mm. The skewed blade geometry reaches tight spots, such as the decorative patterns on the handle and finishing the rim of the bowl.
The hook knife is the SK1 model, with an inner radius of 25 mm, a blade length of 50 mm and a width of 17 mm; the overall length is 155 mm and the handle length 105 mm. The hook knife is single-bevelled, so it cuts a concave surface without the tip digging into the wood.
The blades of both knives are 1066 carbon steel and hardened to 57–59 HRC, the bevel is 20° and the handles are ash. The blank is lime and pre-sawn to the shape of a spoon. Blade maintenance supplies include a leather strop and polishing paste, finishing supplies sandpaper and, for marking, a pencil; to protect the fingers, the pack includes cut-protection tape and plasters for small cuts. The manufacturer’s recommended age is 14 years, and adult supervision is recommended for younger users. BeaverCraft carving knife set spoon is the most demanding of the sets; the single-knife sets are BeaverCraft carving knife set bird, starter kit, BeaverCraft carving knife set Dala horse, starter kit and BeaverCraft carving knife set wizard, starter kit.
Intended use and suitability:
The set is intended for woodcarving by hand: carving one decorative spoon following the instructions and learning to work a concave surface.
- A first carving project without previous experience: the pre-sawn blank, the pattern template and the illustrated instruction book in Finnish guide the carving of the spoon step by step.
- Hollowing the spoon bowl: the SK1 hook knife and its 25 mm inner radius determine how deep and steep a bowl you can carve.
- Shaping and decorating the handle: the skewed 60 mm blade of the C13 reaches narrow spots and makes a precise cut at the edges of the patterns.
- Concave surface technique: carving the bowl teaches changing the cutting direction, which is not needed in flat-surfaced figure work.
- Supervised carving: the manufacturer’s recommended age is 14 years; a younger user needs adult supervision and cut-protection tape on the fingers.
- Other carving projects: both knives, the leather strop and the polishing paste stay in use, for example for carving ladles and kuksa cups.

BeaverCraft carving knife set spoon instructions for use:
1. Preparation: Set aside a sturdy table and good lighting. Wrap cut-protection tape around your thumb and index finger. Check that the blades are firmly in the handles.
2. Transferring the pattern: Using the pencil, draw the outline of the spoon, the edge of the bowl and the handle pattern on the surface of the blank.
3. Hollow the bowl first: Hollow the bowl with the SK1 hook knife while the blank is still thick and sturdy. Work with short, rolling strokes from the centre towards the edges and turn the blank so that you always cut with the grain.
4. Shaping the outside: Carve the outside of the bowl and the handle with the C13 using short shavings away from yourself. Check the wall thickness by feeling it between your thumb and index finger.
5. Patterning the handle: For the patterns, first make a bounding cut and then remove a shaving at an angle towards it.
6. Blade maintenance: Strop the straight blade on the leather strop with polishing paste. The inner edge of the hook knife is stropped on a round base, for example one wrapped in a strip of leather treated with paste.
7. Sanding and finishing: Sand the surface from the coarsest paper to the finest, dampen the surface with water, let it dry and sand the raised grain again.
8. Use and maintenance: Treat the finished spoon with food-safe oil if it will be used as cutlery. Wipe the blades dry after use and oil them lightly; carbon steel rusts in damp conditions.
Warnings:
- Both knives are very sharp and factory-sharpened. Always cut away from yourself and keep your other hand out of the path of the blade.
- The hook knife cuts with a pulling movement towards the body; guide the movement past the knees, not over the thigh or stomach.
- The set is not a toy. Keep out of the reach of children; a child may use the tools only under adult supervision.
- The manufacturer’s recommended age is 14 years; adult supervision is recommended for younger users depending on their experience and motor skills.
- Use cut-protection tape on your fingers; in the thumb push, the thumb presses on the back of the blade, not the edge.
- A dull blade slips more easily than a sharp one, so strop the edges regularly.
- Do not use the knives as a lever or chisel, or for cutting materials other than wood; the blade can break under sideways load.
- The polishing paste is not edible. A spoon intended as cutlery is treated with food-safe oil and washed by hand.
- Wood dust can irritate the respiratory tract; sand in a well-ventilated space.

Recycling instructions:
Sort the cardboard packaging and instruction book into cardboard and paper. Wood shavings and blank offcuts go into wood waste or energy waste. Sort discarded blades into metal collection and the wooden handles into wood waste; protect the sharp edge before disposal, for example by taping cardboard over it. Used sandpaper, cut-protection tape and oily rags go into mixed waste; spread oily rags out to dry before disposal because of the risk of spontaneous combustion.
