Description
Yato cordless drill 18V 40 Nm , body only, is an 18-volt cordless drill/driver with a maximum torque of 40 Nm. The two-speed mechanical gearbox gives speeds of 0–440 min⁻¹ and 0–1650 min⁻¹, and the self-centring keyless chuck holds drill bits and bit holders with diameters of 1.5–13 mm. The body-only model is supplied without a battery and charger, and it uses Yato 18V system Li-Ion slide-on batteries.
The drilling function is rated for holes up to 25 mm in wood and 10 mm in steel. The tool has no impact function, so it is designed for drilling wood, wood-based panels, plastic and metals and for driving and removing screws. Behind the chuck, the torque adjustment ring and overload clutch limit the screwing torque, and in the drilling position the full torque is transmitted to the bit.
The trigger has stepless electronic speed control (potentiometer), and the spindle brake stops the chuck quickly after the trigger is released. The direction of rotation is changed with the R/L selector above the trigger, and the LED work light illuminates the drilling point. The gearbox housing is metal and the gear hardness is 53–56 HRC; the body is rubberised, glass-fibre reinforced polyamide.
The weight of the tool without the battery is 1.2 kg. The insulation class is III and its IP rating is IP20, sound pressure level 71.0 dB(A), the sound power level 82.0 dB(A) and vibration 3.0 m/s². The handle has a metal belt hook, and the battery charge level is shown by the four-stage indicator on the Yato 18V battery. Available batteries are 2 Ah (YT-828461), 3 Ah (YT-828462), 4 Ah (YT-828463) and 6 Ah (YT-828464).
Uses and suitability:
The Yato cordless drill 18V 40 Nm is designed for light and medium drilling and screwing work that does not need an impact function. If you already have a Yato 18V battery and charger, the body-only model complements your tool range with the same battery. The corresponding set version with a battery and charger is the Yato cordless drill 18V 40Nm + 2 Ah battery and charger set; a brushless body-only alternative is the Yato cordless drill 18V 45Nm, brushless motor, body only. For charging the batteries, you can use, for example, the Yato battery charger 18V 2.2A.
- Furniture and fitted furniture installation: Driving screws with adjustable torque in the lower gear (0–440 min⁻¹), where the overload clutch prevents the screw head from sinking too deep and the thread from stripping.
- Drilling wood and boards: Holes up to 25 mm in diameter in the higher gear (0–1650 min⁻¹), for example in battens, plywood and chipboard; place a wooden base underneath when drilling through holes so that the edge of the hole does not splinter.
- Drilling metals: Holes up to 10 mm in steel as well as aluminium, brass and copper; larger holes are drilled via a pilot hole, and steel is cooled with machine oil.
- Maintenance and repair work: Removing screws anticlockwise at the lowest speed and using screwdriver bits with a bit holder or directly in the chuck.
Package contents:
- Cordless drill/driver 18 V body only (without battery and charger)
- Metal belt hook fitted
Features:
- Two-speed gearbox: Mechanical gear selection; low gear for screwing, high gear for drilling.
- Torque adjustment: Adjustment ring behind the chuck and overload clutch; a separate drilling position in which the clutch does not limit the torque.
- Variable speed control: The speed adjusts according to how far the trigger is pressed (potentiometer).
- Spindle brake and quick stop: The chuck stops quickly, which makes changing bits easier.
- Self-centring keyless chuck: Bits 1.5–13 mm are tightened by hand without a chuck key.
- Reversing switch: R/L selection for drilling and removing screws.
- LED work light: Illuminates the drilling point.
- Metal gear housing: Gear hardness 53–56 HRC.
- Durable body: Rubberised, glass-fibre reinforced polyamide and a shaped handle.
- Yato 18V battery system: The same slide-on battery fits the other tools in the range; the battery cells are protected against overheating.

Yato cordless drill 18V 40 Nm user instructions:
1. Charging the battery: Charge the battery with a Yato 18V charger indoors in a dry place. The red indicator light on the charger is on during charging and the green light comes on when the battery is full. A Li-Ion battery can be charged at any time, as it has no memory effect.
2. Fitting the battery: Slide the battery onto the rail at the bottom of the handle until the latch locks. Before fitting the battery, make sure the trigger is not pressed.
3. Fitting the bit: Remove the battery, place a drill bit or bit holder in the keyless chuck and tighten the chuck by hand so that the bit is held firmly.
4. Gear and torque: Use the gear selector to select the low gear for screwing and the high gear for drilling. When screwing, set the adjustment ring to the lowest suitable number and test the torque on scrap material; when drilling, set the ring to the drilling symbol. The numbered positions are not used for drilling.
5. Direction of rotation: Select R (clockwise) for drilling and driving screws or L (anticlockwise) for removing screws. The direction is changed only when the tool has stopped.
6. Working: Secure the workpiece with clamps or in a vice, mark the drilling point with a centre punch and start at low speed. Hold the tool with both hands and press only in line with the bit. Take breaks during work; the temperature of the outer surfaces must not exceed 60 °C.
7. Maintenance: Remove the battery before maintenance. Clean the body and ventilation openings with compressed air (max. 0.3 MPa), a brush or a dry cloth without solvents. Store the battery at 0–30 °C at about 70% charge and charge it at least once a year during long-term storage.
Warnings:
- Personal protective equipment: Wear safety glasses, hearing protection and protective gloves.
- Battery out before adjustments: Remove the battery before changing the bit, making adjustments, carrying out maintenance and putting the tool into storage.
- Hidden wiring: Hold the tool by the insulated gripping surfaces if the bit may hit hidden electrical cables.
- Reaction torque: Support the tool well; a jamming bit can twist the tool in your hand.
- Long drill bits: Do not exceed the maximum permitted speed of the bit, and always start drilling at low speed with the bit against the workpiece.
- Not for damp environments: IP rating IP20: the tool must not be exposed to rain or moisture or used in explosive environments.
- Li-Ion battery: Do not short-circuit the battery terminals, do not use a damaged battery and do not charge the battery unsupervised. If electrolyte gets into the eyes, rinse with plenty of water and seek medical attention.
- Children: Keep the tool and battery out of the reach of children.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Are a battery and charger included with the Yato cordless drill 18V 40 Nm body-only model?
No. The body-only model is supplied without a battery and charger. The tool uses Yato 18V system Li-Ion batteries, which are available in capacities of 2, 3, 4 and 6 Ah.
Can the tool drill concrete?
No. The tool has no impact function, so it is designed for drilling wood, boards, plastic and metals and for screwing. Concrete requires a hammer drill or a rotary hammer.
What is the largest hole the drill can make in wood and steel?
The manufacturer states the maximum drilling diameter as 25 mm in wood and 10 mm in steel.
Which gear is used for screwdriving?
The low gear (0–440 min⁻¹). The high gear (0–1650 min⁻¹) is intended for drilling.
How is the torque adjustment ring used?
When screwing, the ring is set to the lowest working number, so the overload clutch clicks at the set torque. When drilling, the ring is set to the drilling symbol, so the full 40 Nm torque is available.
Recycling instructions:
The Yato cordless drill 18V 40 Nm is electrical and electronic equipment that must not be disposed of with mixed waste. Take the device to a WEEE collection point at the end of its life. Take Li-Ion batteries separately to battery collection; tape the battery terminals before returning them to prevent short circuits. Sort the cardboard packaging into cardboard collection and the plastic parts into plastic collection.
