Sharpening the knife
Although the BeaverCraft knife blade is made of high-quality steel and is pre-sharpened at the factory, every user must keep the blade sharp regularly. Keeping the blade sharp is essential for smooth, precise carving. In this section we discuss how you can keep your knife blade sharp.
How to sharpen the BeaverCraft whittling knife:
Equipment:
- Grinder or whetstone
- Leather strop
- Honing compound
Steps:
- Choosing a whetstone:
- Use a medium whetstone to change the shape of the edge or create new edge angles.
- Use a finer stone to finish the edge and get it precisely sharp.
- Sharpening the blade:
- Place the knife on the whetstone so that the edge angle stays the same throughout sharpening.
- Move the knife over the stone in repeated, even strokes. Remember to sharpen the blade evenly along its whole length.
- Check the sharpness regularly and move to a finer stone when you are happy with the shape of the edge.
- Stropping:
- Apply honing compound to the leather strop.
- Hold the knife at a low angle to the strop and draw the blade lightly along the leather. Repeat this several times until the edge is mirror-bright and extremely sharp.
- Finishing:
- Test the sharpness carefully, for example on paper. The blade should cut the paper effortlessly.
- Use the knife with care and enjoy a sharp, efficient cut!
Tips:
- The angle is key: Keep the sharpening angle consistent with every stroke.
- Patience: Do not rush. Sharpening is a skill, and mastering it can take time.
- Storage: Store your knife correctly. Do not leave it in a damp place or where it can come into contact with other hard materials, so that the blade is not damaged.
