Description
Irwin wood drill bit Auger is an auger bit for drilling deep holes of accurate diameter in wood. The bit body is hardened chromium alloy steel, which withstands the torsional load on a long body without bending. The range covers diameters of 6–32 mm in four length classes, so the same bit model suits both feed-throughs in thin building boards and long holes in solid wood.
The tip of the bit has a self-feeding screw point that pulls the bit evenly into the material without heavy feed pressure. The spur around the screw cuts the wood fibres before the chip is lifted, so the hole entry stays clean and the surface does not splinter.
The Lewis spiral, a wide, flat-bottomed flute, clears dust and coarse chips even from a deep hole. Efficient chip removal stops the bit from jamming, reduces frictional heat and eases the load on the drill. The working lengths are 114, 138, 163, 223 and 323 mm and the corresponding overall lengths 191, 215, 240 and 400 mm.
The hex shank locks into a three-jaw chuck without slipping and transfers torque to the tip even at a knot. The bit suits both mains and cordless drills. Alternatives include Irwin wood drill bit Power and Irwin wood drill bit Brad Point.
Intended use and suitability:
The auger bit drills straight holes of accurate diameter in solid wood, glulam and boards. Choose the diameter to suit the part that passes through and the length to suit the thickness of the structure.
- Log and joinery work: holes for dowels, threaded rods and long structural screws in logs and glulam beams; the 400 mm models of 6–13 mm go through thick structures in one pass.
- Frame and roof structures: cable and pipe feed-throughs in roof trusses, floor joists and studs; the large diameters of 18–32 mm suit pipe feed-throughs.
- Outdoor structures: pressure-treated timber, jetty structures and decking frames that need a long drilling depth.
- Furniture work: the short 191 mm bits of 6–17 mm suit pilot holes for dowel joints.
Package contents:
- 1 pcs auger bit in the selected diameter and length
Features:
- Self-feeding screw point: pulls the bit into the wood, so no feed pressure is needed.
- Spur: cuts the fibres before the chip is lifted and keeps the hole entry clean.
- Lewis spiral: the open flute clears dust from a deep hole and prevents clogging.
- Hex shank: does not slip in the chuck, even when hitting a knot.
- Hardened chromium alloy steel: the long body withstands torsion without bending.
- Diameters 6–32 mm: four length classes with the same geometry.
Technical specifications:
- Diameters: 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32 mm.
- Working length / overall length: 114/191 mm (6–17 mm), 138/215 mm (18–26 mm), 163/240 mm (28–32 mm), 223/400 mm (6 mm), 323/400 mm (8, 10, 12, 13 mm).
- Shank: hex shank.
- Body material: hardened chromium alloy steel.
- Spiral: Lewis spiral, single cutting edge.
- Tip: self-feeding screw and spur.
Irwin wood drill bit instructions for use:
Fitting: Push the hex shank fully into a three-jaw chuck and tighten the jaws evenly. Select the rotary mode on the drill, because the hammer mode breaks the feed screw.
Drilling: Place the screw point on the marked spot, hold the drill with both hands and let the screw pull the bit in. Drill at a steady speed and keep the bit perpendicular.
Chip removal: In deep holes, pull the bit slightly out from time to time while the drill is running so that the chips leave along the spiral.
Finishing: Pull the bit out of the hole with the rotation set to forward. Wipe and oil the bit after use and store it in a dry place.
Warnings:
- The screw point pulls the bit quickly into the material: use a drill with a side handle so that a jammed bit does not twist your wrist.
- Do not use the hammer mode or an impact driver, as the feed screw and the hardened body will be damaged.
- Check the drilling line for nails and connector plates; hitting metal destroys the spur.
- Wear safety glasses: drilling throws out coarse dust and chips.
- Secure the workpiece before drilling.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
What diameters and lengths does the Irwin wood drill bit Auger cover? Diameters of 6–32 mm; the short bits are 191, 215 and 240 mm long and the long 6–13 mm models are 400 mm.
Is the bit suitable for an impact driver? No. Despite the hex shank, the impact mechanism can break the long body or damage the feed screw; use the drilling mode.
Why does the bit not advance even though I press hard? An auger bit is not pressed. If the screw does not pull, the tip is blunt or the flute is clogged. Pull the bit out and clear the flute.
How do I choose the length? The working length must be greater than the thickness of the structure being drilled; a working length of 323 mm is enough for a feed-through in a log structure, for example.
Can the bit be sharpened? The spur and the cutting edge are sharpened with a fine file, following the original angles; the feed screw is not filed.
Recycling instructions:
A worn or broken drill bit goes to metal collection. Sort the cardboard or plastic retail packaging into cardboard or plastic collection according to its material marking.
