Description
Yato cordless garden tiller 18V (YT-85271) is a light, cordless cultivator for loosening the soil in small vegetable patches, flower beds and allotments. The rotating tines work the soil in a strip 155 mm wide to a depth of up to 160 mm , and the tine speed is 270 rpm. The unit runs on Li-Ion batteries from the Yato 18 V battery system, so it uses the same batteries as the other garden and power tools in the range.
The tiller is a body-only version: the battery and charger are not included. Compatible batteries are Yato 18 V Li-Ion batteries 2 Ah, 3 Ah, 4 Ah, 6 Ah and 9 Ah (YT-828461–YT-828465), charged with Yato chargers YT-82848 or YT-82849. The voltage is 18 V DC and the electrical protection class III.
It has an upright design: the motor housing and tines are at the bottom, and the telescopic shaft adjusts steplessly to the user’s height. The adjustable front handle and the rear handle give a two-handed grip. The operating switch has a lock-off button that prevents accidental starting, and there is a guard in front of the tines. Without the battery, the unit weighs 4.24 kg.
Thanks to its compact size you can work close to existing plants, and battery operation removes the need for an extension cable. The tiller is intended for small areas; it is not suitable for cultivating large fields. The noise level is LpA 81.5 dB(A) and the guaranteed sound power level 88 dB(A), so ear defenders are necessary.
Uses and suitability:
The Yato cordless garden tiller 18V is suitable for loosening the topsoil, mechanically removing weed roots and preparing a seedbed in small areas.
- Vegetable patches and allotments: working the soil row by row before sowing and planting; the 155 mm working width suits loosening between rows without damaging plants.
- Flower beds and perennial beds: breaking up hardened topsoil and mixing bark mulch or compost into the soil.
- Greenhouses and gardens with no power point: battery operation lets you work without an extension cable; the same battery fits other tools in the range, for example the Yato cordless trimmer 18V 108-137 cm, body only and Yato cordless hedge trimmer 18V 45 cm, body only.
- Dry and stony soil: according to the manufacturer, the tiller also works in difficult conditions, but soil that is too hard or dry should be watered before work and visible stones removed.
Package contents:
- Cordless garden tiller (body only) with tines and tine guard
- Front handle (fitted before first use)
- Instruction manual
Battery and charger are not included. Compatible battery: Yato 18V Li-Ion battery; charger: Yato battery charger 18V 2.4-4.5A smart fast charger.

- Speed 270 rpm: the tine speed is designed for loosening soil, not digging.
- Telescopic shaft: stepless length adjustment with a locking lever; also makes transport and storage easier.
- Adjustable front handle: the position is chosen according to the user’s height and the work area; you can work with your elbows bent and your back straight.
- Safety switch: starting requires pressing the lock-off button and the operating switch; the switch cannot be locked on.
- Tine guard: protects the user and limits soil being thrown out.

Instructions for using the Yato cordless garden tiller 18V:
Assembly: thread the front handle through the cable guard, adjust the position and tighten the front handle lock. Adjust the shaft length by pulling the length adjustment locking lever back, setting the length and tightening the lever.
Connecting the battery: push a charged Yato 18 V battery into the battery slot until the latch locks. Remove the battery by pressing the latch and pulling the battery out.
Preparing the work area: remove stones, roots and wires; make sure there are no electrical cables in the ground. Water soil that is too hard or dry beforehand. Do not use the tiller on concrete, wood or other hard surfaces.
Starting: stand the tiller upright at the starting point, grip both handles, press the lock-off button with your thumb and then the operating switch. The unit stops when the operating switch is released; the tines may keep turning for a moment.
Working: always push the tiller forwards as you walk; do not pull it towards you. Work in slightly overlapping rows. Do not force the unit down: the tines do not need to sink more than 3–4 cm deeper at a time. If the tines hit an obstacle, switch off the unit, remove the battery and check for damage.
Maintenance: clean the tines straight after use with a brush or cloth before the soil dries; compressed air max. 0.3 MPa. Do not wash with a water jet or immerse in water. After cleaning, protect the tines with a thin layer of oil. Replace the tines with original ones every two years or 50 operating hours at an authorised service centre.
Storage: remove the battery and store in a dry, frost-free place at 10–30 °C out of the reach of children.
Warnings:
- Read the instruction manual before use. Wear safety glasses, ear defenders, protective gloves, sturdy footwear and long trousers.
- Keep hands and feet away from the rotating tines. The tines keep turning for a moment after the operating switch is released.
- Do not work when other people, children or pets are nearby. Stones and roots thrown out are a hazard to bystanders too.
- Do not expose the unit to rain. Do not use with damaged guards.
- Work across a slope, not up or down; do not use on steep slopes. Walk, do not run.
- Always remove the battery before cleaning, adjusting, checking the tines and transport.
- Use only Yato 18 V Li-Ion batteries YT-828461–YT-828465 and Yato chargers YT-82848 or YT-82849. Modifying the battery or the connection is prohibited.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):

Recycling instructions:
Sort the cardboard packaging into cardboard collection and the plastic bags into plastic collection. A discarded Yato cordless garden tiller 18V is waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE): it must not be disposed of with mixed waste but taken to a WEEE collection point or the retailer. Return the removable Li-Ion battery separately to a battery collection point; tape the battery terminals before returning it. Worn tines are steel scrap suitable for metal collection.
