Description
Yato cordless chain sharpener 18V body only is an 18 V cordless bench sharpener for chainsaw and cordless saw chains. The grinding wheel speed is 6500 min⁻¹, the grinding wheel is 108 x 23 x 3.2 mm and the sharpening angle adjusts by ±35°. The body-only model is supplied without a battery or charger, and it works with all Yato 18V range Li-Ion batteries.
The sharpener is fixed to a workbench or a log, and the chain is placed in the metal guide groove, where the chain stop locks each cutting tooth under the wheel. The grinding head is lowered onto the tooth by its handle, and the chain is moved forward one tooth at a time. The sharpening angle is read from the scale and locked with the knob, so all teeth are sharpened to the same angle and the same length.
Battery operation also makes sharpening possible in the forest, at the cutting site and on construction sites without mains power. The battery charge level indicator shows the remaining energy. The metal guide holds the chain in place and gives a repeatable result from tooth to tooth; the plastic wheel guard and the transparent spark guard protect the user from sparks.
The sharpener weighs 1.7 kg without the battery. The electrical safety protection class is III and the IP rating IPX0. The sound pressure level is 59.1 dB(A) and the sound power level 72.1 dB(A). The same sharpener with a battery and charger is the Yato saw chain sharpener set 18V with 2AH Li-Ion battery.
Uses and suitability:
The sharpener is intended for grinding the saw chains of chainsaws, cordless chainsaws and electric saws with a grinding wheel.
- Petrol chainsaw chains: Chains used for forestry and firewood work are sharpened in the forest or yard on battery power without an extension cable.
- Cordless and electric saw chains: The same unit also sharpens, for example, the chain of the Yato cordless chainsaw 16″ 2X18V, body only saw.
- Repeated sharpening in the workshop: Bench mounting and the angle adjustment with a scale give the same angle and tooth length along the whole chain, which keeps the saw cutting straight.
- Users of the Yato 18V battery system: The body-only model adds to the tool range of a user with the same battery, without a new battery and charger.
Package contents:
The body-only model is supplied without a battery or charger.
- Cordless chain sharpener YT-84981 with metal chain guide and bench mounting.
- Grinding wheel 108 x 23 x 3.2 mm, fitted.
Features:
The Yato cordless chain sharpener 18V is built for repeatable sharpening without mains power.
- 6500 min⁻¹ grinding wheel: The wheel speed is enough to grind hard cutting teeth with a brief contact, so the tooth does not heat up.
- Angle adjustment ±35°: The sharpening angle is selected from the scale in both directions, so left-hand and right-hand teeth are sharpened with the same setting.
- Metal chain guide: The guide groove and chain stop lock the tooth under the wheel and give the same tooth length along the whole chain.
- 18 V battery operation: Works with Yato 18V Li-Ion batteries 2.0–9.0 Ah; charge level indicator on the battery.
- Light body: 1.7 kg without the battery, mounts on a workbench or a log.
- Protection: Wheel guard, transparent spark guard and two-position power switch.
- Standard wheel: A 108 mm wheel with a 23 mm hole is a common wheel size for bench sharpeners.

Instructions for using the Yato cordless chain sharpener 18V:
Fix the sharpener firmly to the edge of a workbench or to a log before use and check that the grinding wheel is undamaged and tight. Push a charged Yato 18V battery into the slot until the latch locks. Place the saw chain in the guide groove with the cutting teeth towards the wheel and set the sharpening angle on the scale to the value given by the chain manufacturer (usually 25–35°); lock the setting with the knob.
Move the first tooth against the chain stop and adjust the stop so that the wheel grinds the tooth angle lightly. Switch on the unit, lower the grinding head onto the tooth by the handle for a brief moment and lift it up; long contact heats the tooth and softens the steel. Move the chain on one tooth and repeat for every tooth facing the same way. Turn the angle to the opposite direction and sharpen the remaining teeth with the same chain stop setting so that all teeth end up the same length.
Switch off the unit and remove the battery before changing the wheel or cleaning. Clean off the grinding dust with a dry cloth or brush and store the sharpener in a dry place out of the reach of children. Check the depth gauges with a separate gauge after sharpening.
Warnings:
Read the instruction manual in full before use. The rotating grinding wheel and the sharp saw chain can cause serious injuries.
- Protective equipment: Wear safety glasses, ear defenders and cut-resistant gloves when handling the chain.
- Sparks and dust: Sharpen only on a non-combustible surface; grinding sparks ignite sawdust and fuel.
- Wheel condition: Do not use a cracked or worn wheel; the wheel size must be 108 x 23 mm and the thickness no more than 3.2 mm.
- Run-on: The wheel keeps turning after switching off; remove the battery before adjusting, changing the wheel and cleaning.
- Overheating: Brief contact per tooth; a blue colour on the tooth means the steel has softened.
- Not in rain: IP rating IPX0: use only in dry conditions.
- Li-Ion battery: Yato 18V batteries and chargers only; do not short-circuit the terminals or expose to fire.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ):
Which battery and charger does the Yato cordless chain sharpener 18V, body only need?
Any Yato 18V Li-Ion battery, for example the Yato 18V Li-Ion battery 2.0 Ah, and a Yato 18V charger, such as the Yato battery charger 18V 2.2A. The battery set version is YT-84980.
Which chains is the sharpener suitable for?
The most common chainsaw chains whose teeth fit under the 3.2 mm wheel; the sharpening angle is set on the ±35° scale to the chain manufacturer’s value.
How do you get all the teeth the same length?
The chain stop and the grinding head depth stop are kept at the same setting for the whole chain; only the angle is turned to the opposite side.
How much chain can be sharpened on one battery?
Sharpening uses little energy because the wheel touches the tooth only briefly; even a 2.0 Ah battery is enough to sharpen several chains.
Can the wheel of the Yato cordless chain sharpener 18V be replaced with another wheel?
Yes, as long as the wheel measures 108 x 23 mm and is no more than 3.2 mm thick.
Recycling instructions:
Sort the cardboard packaging into cardboard collection. A discarded Yato cordless chain sharpener 18V is waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE): take the unit to a WEEE collection point or to a shop that accepts electrical equipment, not to mixed waste. Take the separate Li-Ion battery to a battery collection point with the terminals taped. A worn grinding wheel is mixed waste.
