Hedge trimmers and grass shears

Cordless hedge trimmers are 18V battery-powered machines for cutting and shaping hedges, shrubs and ornamental plants. The group includes hedge trimmers with 45–56 cm blades, long-reach hedge trimmers, a 2x18V hedge trimmer, cordless grass and shrub shears, a 2in1 multi-tool (hedge trimmer and pruning saw), and replacement blades and a telescopic pole. The machines are used in home gardens, in property maintenance and in landscaping work. All machines use the Yato 18V battery.

Selection criteria

• Blade length: a 45 cm blade suits small and medium-sized shrubs, a 55–56 cm blade wide and long hedges.
• Shaft length: a long-reach hedge trimmer cuts tall hedges and the top of the hedge without a ladder. The cutting angle is adjustable.
• Grass and shrub shears: a light machine for shaping small shrubs and for lawn edges. The blade is changed to suit the job: a 100 mm grass shear blade or a 200 mm hedge trimmer blade.
• Power: the brushless (BL) motor and the 2x18V model suit long and heavy cutting.
• Body only or set: a body-only model is supplied without a battery and charger, while a set includes a 2 Ah battery and a charger.

How thick a branch can a hedge trimmer cut?
Depending on the model, a hedge trimmer cuts branches about 15 mm thick, and the grass and shrub shears branches of about 8 mm. Thicker branches are cut with pruning shears or a pruning saw.

What are grass and shrub shears used for?
For shaping small shrubs and border plants and for cutting lawn edges and tight spots where a trimmer or a hedge trimmer is too large.
